Veteran Canadian rap icons Sweatshop Union and Canada’s preeminent hip-hop label URBNET are pleased to announce a new partnership which will see three brand new Sweatshop Union releases on URBNET this summer. The three “Sweatshop Union Presents” CDs will be released in Canada on June 15 and in the United States on August 10th.
Sweatshop Union began as a progressive-minded hip-hop co-operative in 2000 and has been enlightening the Canadian hip-hop landscape with their ace combination of perceptive lyrics and neck-snapping beats ever since. They have been extensively touring Canada since 2001, the United States over the last four years and have been recognized in Urb Magazines next 100 for 2009. Comprised of several west-coast hip-hop groups, 2010 sees the crew organizing efforts to concentrate on their bread and butter — moving the crowd while rocking the microphone.
Pigeon Hole, down with the Union since day one, make a strong bid for hip-hop relevance in 2010 with their brand-new full-length “Age Like Astronauts.” Fortunately for listeners, Pigeon Hole’s ten years on the scene have failed to mellow the duo of MC/producers, who proudly refuse to be pinned down to any specific genre or sound. Their music runs the gamut from boom-bap hip-hop classicism to ecstatic psychedelic freak outs — sometimes on the same track. “Age Like Astronauts” features songs with D-Sisive, Moka Only, DJ Itchy Ron and Mos Eisley of Sweatshop Union.
Another charter member of Sweatshop Union returns on June 15 with the release of Dirty Circus’ debut release “Alive And Well.” Years in the making and anticipated by fans for almost as long, “Alive And Well” is meticulously constructed as a tribute to the golden years of hip-hop when beats and rhyme reigned supreme over image and bling. After 10 years and five albums with the larger Sweatshop Union collective, Dirty Circus’ Metty and Mos bring it all back home with deep concentration on this effort, curating beats by West Coast luminaries such as Swollen Members’ Rob The Viking, Chin Injeti and features collaborations by Geo from Blue Scholars and cuts by Rhettmatic. Joining the fun on “Alive And Well” is a virtual whos-who of stunning independent rap talent, including Bootie Brown from the Pharcyde and Canadian underground hero Shad K.
“Sweatshop Union Presents: The Trillionaire$” is the third new CD to drop on June 15. Constructed as both a critique of capitalism run amok as well as a paean to the good life to which we all strive, The Trillionaire$ is hip-hop satire at it’s highest level. Produced soley by Metty (twice nominated for a Juno with Sweatshop Union), The Trillionaire$ is a collaboration between Metty and respected west-coast scene veteran Evil Ebenezer, and features cameos by underground legends Josh Martinez, Frank Nitt from Frank N Dank and AWOL ONE, among other notables.
Still going stronger than ever, Sweatshop Union and URBNET are pleased to announce three brand-new releases by Pigeon Hole, Dirty Circus and The Trillionaire$ this summer. All three full-length will be released on CD and digital June 15 in Canada and August 10th in the United States.
This video is innovative only because its a new way of marketting for shows. People don’t look at flyers no more or even look in their inbox when they see an invite to a show or club or event. So we took it a step further. We created a visual flyer with original raps and beats by the headliner. Let the trend start.
On May 25th at Fortune Sound Club DEFENDERS OF THE FAITH will be opening up for the legendary EPMD.
After taking over the airwaves with their breakout track, “Vans,” and being named #5 in the Rolling Stone’s list of Top 50 songs for that year, The Pack have returned with a new anthem titled “Wolfpack Party.” The Berkeley, CA based group, comprised of Lil Uno, Young L, Lil B and Stunnaman, have released a new track off of their SMC Recordings debut album, Wolfpack Party, on MySpace Music. The forthcoming record features production by Young L with additional help from hit making new comers, The Cataracs, keeping the west coast hip-hop group musically as leaders of “the pack.”
The bay area hip-hop group were discovered by Hip Hop legend Too $hort, who signed them to Jive Records. They released an album and an EP with the label, quickly achieving a large following for their unique and edgy sound created by in-house producer and group member Young L. The group’s musical style is appealing to everyone from hip hop heads to skate boarders to suburban high school kids. Their music’s influence has had great reach, even making its way into famed comedian Dave Chappell Skits, who brought up their popular song “Vans” to the delight of the audience at a recent show.

As one of Canada’s most credible young hip-hop entrepreneurs, George Reefah has built his brand upon a steadfast desire to “stand for something and have millions of people across the world follow in those footsteps.” Having been apart of the Canadian hip-hop community since early 2003, George Reefah is no rookie to the game. But what is it that makes him stand out amongst his predecessors and counterparts? Everything!
As President and co-founder of Freshilystic Records, George Reefah’s unwavering ability to market himself as a product of his own invention is undeniable. With one finger on the pulse of the industry and the other rapped around the minds of his public, Reefah’s attention to detail and watchful eye are two of his strongest attributes. “I think that what makes me a sound solo artist is the fact that I am never satisfied. I love to create and then expand upon that creation. I am very aware and I take the time to look at the little things. If you can pay attention to and take care of the little things then the big things will take care of themselves.”
Having worked with Major Music Productions, a large Canadian production house whose previous exports include G-Unit artists Lloyd Banks, and Mobb Deep, as well as the American production team Mass Ave. and Billboard chart topping producer Michael Grant, Reefah has already released two mixtapes [Reefalution (2003) and The Clear and Present Danger (2009)], three full length LP’s [Clear Tha Building (2004), The Campaign (2005), Steal The Show (2007)], three singles [Burn (2005), Public Service Announcement (2008), Paparazzi (2008)] and one EP, The Paparazzi EP (2008).
But it isn’t his impressive list of releases that has people taking notice; it’s his way with words that bring them to their knees. “I’ve always been something of a wordsmith. I write poems, and stories in my downtime. This is why I consider myself an artist with great lyrical talent. My favorite artists growing up were those who were able to make their words sound good rather than using good words. I looked to the Wu-Tang Clan for this. I loved their lingo, their accents, and most importantly their flow. For this reason, it is my flow that I cherish as my greatest attribute.”
His new single “Rollin” was released digitally May 10th, followed by a series of Billboard charting singles.
Donnis, the globetrotting MC from Atlanta, is making an unprecedented move by simultaneously releasing an album and a mixtape on June 22nd. This bold announcement is an extraordinary testament to his buzz both at home and abroad. His major label debut, the Fashionably Late EP, will drop on Atlantic and is truly a solo effort, proving he can stand and deliver on his own two feet. Donnis brings in help from friends Estelle, John Legend, GLC & more for the Fashionably Late mixtape, presented by Clinton Sparks. The mixtape will feature tracks from the EP sprinkled among beats that Donnis gladly laces with his playful lyricism and southern inflection.
The formerly active member of the United States Air Force made the coveted Freshman 2010 cover of XXL Magazine just months ago, deeming him one to watch this year. He now finds himself at the top of his game as well as numerous “best of” lists after the release of his Diary Of An ATL Brave mixtape last August. It doesn’t hurt that the 25-year old MC already has plenty of friends in high places; a resounding endorsement by A-Trak, who put out his first single “Gone” on the Brooklyn-based Fool’s Gold Records, and several impressive opening performances for the likes of Snoop, TI and Erykah Badu are combining to form the perfect storm of anticipation for his next move (see below for upcoming Donnis live dates in Hawaii, Japan and across the US).
Both releases promise to demonstrate the unique approach to songwriting that has allowed him to captivate an audience of fans from many walks of life. Verses in which he comes across as conflicted and vulnerable are butted up against club-ready southern anthems and contrasted by auto-tuned summer jams, and then suddenly he’s playfully singing to a woman over nothing but an acoustic guitar. Donnis is simply himself, and it’s easy to see why he promises to be one of the most talked-about artists of the summer.
Bluewater Productions has already completed comic book biographies of Twilight actors Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart and of the author who first brought Twilight to life, Stephenie Meyer. In August, the comics company will add actor Taylor Lautner to the mix.
Lautner, who plays shape shifter Jacob Black in the Twilight films, will get his own comic from Bluewater this August. The 32-page Fame: Taylor Lautner will retail at comic shops, Amazon.com and other online sites for $3.99.
Lautner was a relatively unknown actor until he made his debut in the popular vampire-romance movies. Those days are over. Today, Lautner is as much a household name as are Stewart and Pattinson.
Lautner is also a committed actor. He studied martial arts and packed on 30 pounds of muscle for his role in the Twilight movies.
Of course, Lautner’s smile and chiseled features haven’t hurt his popularity, either, at least not among the movies’ largely female audience.
Kimberly Sherman, who’s penned the biography comics of both Pattinson and Stewart, also wrote the new Lautner comic. Warren Martineck, an artist for DC Comics’ WildStorm studio, provided the interior art, while JuanMar Studios produced the comic’s cover.
You can see exclusive pages of the comic book on MTV: http://splashpage.mtv.com/2010/05/17/taylor-lautner-comic-book-preview/
“The Twilight series has become a pop culture phenomenon,” said Darren Davis, president and founder of Bluewater Productions. “It’s transformed previously unknown actors into superstars. It seems that the same thing is happening with Taylor Lautner. We at Bluewater are happy to bring Taylor’s story to his fans, and hope that his comic helps introduce these readers to the joys of graphic storytelling.”
Bluewater Productions has carved out a niche for itself with its top-selling line of biography comics. The company’s Fame line of biographies, which chronicles the life of influential celebrities, will debut this May with comics focusing on Pattinson and Lady GaGa. Both titles are available then at comic book stores on May26th as well as Amazon in which the comics have ranked up to #300 on the site.
Bluewater also publishes the Female Force and Political Power line of comics. These biographies have features such powers as Nancy Pelosi, Barack Obama, Nelson Mandela and Sarah Palin.
