Cain Velasquez To Appear on HDNet’s “Fighting Words with Mike Straka”

Velasquez Opens Up About “Brown Pride” and his Fight with Brock Lesnar
Friday, October 1 at 8:30 p.m. ET on HDNet

Number one UFC Heavyweight contender Cain Velasquez – who faces champion Brock Lesnar at UFC 121 on October 23rd – has taken a lot of heat over the years for his “Brown Pride” tattoo, but he tells Mike Straka on this Friday’s edition of “Fighting Words” that he got it to honor his parents, who are migrant farm workers who emigrated from Mexico.

“I got the tattoo for all the hard work they did to come over here to this country,” he said.  ”They wanted to raise their family here, for a better life for us. Another reason, growing up, I didn’t really have anybody that I could look up to in the media. I never thought that I could be in the limelight or play professional sports. So the reason I got the “Brown Pride” was to show people like me that it can be done.”

Velasquez also tells Straka he’s not too concerned about Lesnar’s submission victory over Shane Carwin in his last title defense.

“I’m pretty well aware of what could happen if he gets me in that type of submission,” says Velasquez. “I know what to do to get out. I’ve worked a lot on my submissions to know what’s bad and what’s good.”

Velasquez (8-0) knocked out submission specialist Antonio “Minotauro” Nogueira in his last bout.

Velasquez, the 240-pound, former NCAA All American from Arizona State, also opens up to Straka about being a father, and proposing to his fiancée while walking on the beach in Sydney, Australia.

Young Jeezy Rap Game (prod. by Shawty Redd)

We love sequels. Even the bad ones like The Land Before Time 2-12, and that new Wall Street flick, YIKES! Some sequels are good though, like X-Men 2, Nas’ Stillmatic and Young Jeezy’s Thug Motivation 102. So with a third sequel in Jeezy’s soapbox series fast-approaching, the question becomes: can it best the original and go down in history, or go straight to DVD like Aladdin 2: The Return of Jafar? Well, if “Rap Game” make the final cut, then Jeezy’s surely got another heater on his hands and we’d rather have that prove our whole sequel theory.

Buju Banton: Before The Dawn…

Gargamel Music, Inc. is pleased to announce that Reggae superstar Buju Banton’s prophetic new album, Before The Dawn is in stores and online in North America today. While the release date for the UK and France is set for next Monday, October 4, the album will be available in the rest of Europe this Friday, October 1.

The ninth studio album by the international music icon, Before The Dawn boasts 10 powerful tracks that comprise some of the most powerful songs written by Banton since his professional entry into the music business over twenty years ago. In an exclusive interview featured in the new issue ofHip-Hop Weekly magazine, Buju says, “All the songs on this album were written before I and I found I self in this current situation, yet they all speak profoundly to what I and I am going through right now… You might can lock the flesh but you can never lock the spirit of Rasta.” The album has already catapulted to the #2 position on iTunes’ Top Reggae Albums Chart.

Recorded at Banton’s own Gargamel Music studio in Kingston, Jamaica, Before The Dawn literally pierces the soul with traditional roots on the track “Do Good,”classic rock on the tune “No Smoking At All,” and heartfelt Reggae on the especially potent “Battered & Bruised.” The album’s unofficial anthem, “Innocent”strikes a highly personal chord that will resonate deeply with longtime fans.

Despite his current incarceration, Buju was heavily involved in putting together this latest offering – from choosing the final track listing and laboring over the phone with the producers and engineers to get the mixes just right, to conceptualizing the project’s distinguished packaging. Physical copies of the album contain a special note written from inside the Pinellas County Jail in Clearwater, Florida, where he has been housed since January.

Buju Banton finally had his day in court when the trial, which had been riddled with delays, kicked off on Monday, September 20, in Tampa, Florida. An esteemed team of federal criminal defense attorneys, led by David Oscar Markus of Markus & Markus Law, represented the four time Grammy-nominated artist. After four days of testimony and 15 hours of deliberation by a 12 person jury, the Honorable Judge James Moody declared a mistrial. The case will be retried this December. In the meantime, Mr. Markus has filed a motion for bond in an attempt to spring Banton out of jail while he awaits his new trial. A hearing on the motion has already been set for Wednesday, October 6.

A special South Asian themed remix of the hit single “So Much” by Calgary R&B artist Raghav and Konvict recording artist Kardinal Offishall will also be premiering at FILMI 2010, now featuring UK bhangra star H-Dhami.

FILMI 2010 will also be featuring Canadian premieres of “Nach Le” by Philadelphia bhangra artist G-Deep alongside Wu-Tang Clan rapper Cappadonna ; “Teri Aankhon” by MTV Award-Winning Montreal group JoSH ; the Streetsville inspired “My Hometown” by rock artist Zameer ; and “Hypnotize” by Canadian actress/singer Karen David (of BBC’s “Waterloo Road” series fame).

Vancouver bhangra band En Karma, as well as UK singers Navin Kundra and Kazz Kumar, round out the line-up of artists with music videos premiering in Canada at FILMI 2010.

The vision of the FILMI South Asian Film Festival is to promote, discover, introduce and celebrate cinematic endeavours by talented South Asian filmmakers, actors and musicians, and to highlight works with South Asian themes that can be brought to a mainstream audience.

Danko Jones Unveils New Music Video for “Had Enough” STARRING RALPH MACCHIO AND DON JAMIESON

Danko Jones has introduced the second in the soon to be music video trilogy from the album Below the Belt. The new highly-stylized, film-like music video noir for the track “Had Enough” stars Ralph Macchio (The Karate Kid), comedian Don Jamieson (That Metal Show/VH1) and is the prequel to “Full of Regret.” Described as “one-part ‘Sabotage,’ one-part Guy Ritchie, one-part Quentin Tarantino,” by MTV Buzzworthy “Full
of Regret” starred actor Elijah Wood and actress Selma Blair as assassins with cameo roles by Lemmy Kilmister (Motörhead) and Mike Watt (Minutemen, fIREHOSE, Stooges). “Had Enough” will also feature actor Frank Drank (who also stars in the upcoming Seth Rogen movie “The Green Hornet”), reprising his role as Lemmy’s henchman. View an exclusive behind-the-scenes video here:
In “Had Enough,” a “mad scientist” (portrayed by Macchio) has found a way to clone himself and the band of Danko Jones is ordered off to deal with it. Their failure is ultimately what leads henchmen Frank and Lemmy to send Elijah and Selma after them in “Full of Regret.” Directed once again by the Diamond Brothers and shot on location in New York (Yonkers and Brooklyn) the full video will be available next week! “Full of Regret” has been on the Canadian BDS Rock Radio Charts for 26 weeks, 16 of them in the Top 10 (peaking at #5). It is likely to end the year as one of the most played tracks at Rock Radio with 10,000 spins to date and is also featured in EA Games NHL 11. Danko Jones will be performing at the season opener between The Sharks and The Blue Jackets in Stockholm Sweden on October 9th.

Shortly after that he followed-up with a track titled “Let You Go” which released on September 9, 2010. Originally titled “Mila’s Theme” it plays as a tribute to his daughter. Both tracks are climbing the electronic charts and rocking dancefloors across the globe.

Speaking knowledgeably about various musical eras, Seikaly has an inherent understanding for the music that has inspired him and influenced his unique style. Dubbed “Rony Style” by such electronic music heavyweights Morillo, Seikaly himself loosely defines it as “happy underground.”

New Jack Kings // T.Calmese & Vaughan T. // Prod by 14KT, Nick Speed, ZO! and more…

New Jack Kings are:
T. Calmese (aka Illite of the Subterraneous Crew)
-And-
Vaughan T. (of the Athletic Mic League
)

Two unsung heroes from 2 of Michigan’s most influential crews combine forces to author a coming of age story inspired by the infamous era of high top fades, eye brow parts, and house parties. The album revolves around life, love, women and fashion as a solute to artists such as Teddy Riley, Bobby Brown, Michael Jackson, New Edition and Kid n Play who made songs that everyone could relate to.

In addition to being conceptually refreshing, the album is just as musically intriguing as producers Vaughan T, 14KT, Nick Speed, ZO!, and Forkcast sample and “flip” classic new jack swing records in a way that keeps listeners engaged.

Features and contributors include: Buff 1, Mayer Hawthorne, Big Tone, 14KT, Ro Spit, Nick Speed, Aloe Blacc, Zo!, Ella, and Sole Deacon. And even better, its available for FREE DOWNLOAD.

DUCK SAUCE RELEASE STAR-STUDDED VIDEO FOR HIGHLY ANTICIPATED 2ND SINGLE “BARBRA STREISAND”

DIRECTED BY SO-ME, VIDEO FEATURES CAMEOS FROM… ABSOLUTELY EVERYONE

Duck Sauce, the eminent producer duo comprised of A-Trak and Armand Van Helden, are primed to drop their second official single, “Barbra Streisand” on October 12th. If 3 million YouTube views of last year’s debut “aNYway” are any indicator, the official release of “Barbra Streisand” will be met with rabid anticipation as fan-recorded bootlegs have fueled blog excitement all summer.

“Barbra Streisand” continues to perfect the Duck Sauce sound, which joyously mashes classic disco house with forward-thinking dancefloor energy and expert production. A-Trak and AVH are bona fide DJ heroes whose team-ups are fueled by anything-goes samples, an almost childlike sense of fun, and 100% NYC attitude. This approach has made Duck Sauce fans-for-life out of partygoers around the globe, and will continue to convert anyone within earshot of “Barbra”‘s instantly addictive, whistling hook.

For the video, director So Me (Justice, Kid Cudi, MGMT) uses the song to soundtrack a hyperactive, ecstatic New York City travelogue. Shot over a week of long nights out with A-Trak and Armand (including live footage from the Fool’s Gold “Day Off” labor day block party), the clip is a pop-art adventure starring commandeered taxis and hotdog stands, sexy strangers, and a who’s-who of famous friends: rappers, producers, indie rockers, graffiti writers and nightlife icons all take turns adding their own special sauce to the song, turning “Barbra Streisand” into one of this year’s must-rewind clips.

Watch the video and see just how many cameos you can catch, then pick up the “Barbra Streisand” single (featuring striking sleeve art from Fool’s Gold art director Dust La Rock) on October 12th.

Free EP: Erk Tha Jerk -The Prelude

Erk Tha Jerk certainly knows how to satiate his fans. Despite his debut album, Nerd’s Eye View, close on the horizon with a slated November 9th release date, Erk has decided to give away a brand new EP for free. The Prelude includes songs from his forthcoming LP in additon to tracks that will only be available on this free release.

The Prelude premiered through SF Weekly and marks a new high in the anticipation leading up to Nerd’s Eye View. “I’ve always released free music,” Erk explains of the EP’s price tag. “I guess I do it so when the people finally have to pay for something they’ll look back at all the free music and won’t mind spending with me. They know I’m good for it.” Between mixtapes, music videos, and unreleased tracks, some might argue that Erk is spreading himself too thin – that he can’t have much up his sleeve for his upcoming LP. One listen toThe Prelude, though, and it becomes evident that Erk Tha Jerk is just getting started.
