Mixtape: Tommy Blak – Mello Music Volume One
In conjunction with Mello Music Group’s recently released compilation album, Helpless Dreamer, the stalwart indie label has teamed up with Project Blowed DJ Tommy Blak to further highlight Mello’s unrivaled roster of talent. The mixtape, Mello Music Group Volume One, is smooth mix of tracks from the past two years, meant to recap the label roster’s work and provide some holiday treats for eager fans.
A mix of tracks from a variety of artists, the mixtape has some rare gems, including the very first version of “Drugs Outside” over the originalOddisee beat (not the remix fromMental Liberation) featuring DJ Romes on the cuts and featuring rapper Big Pooh and Black Milk. It also includes a selection newer tracks from recently released projects, including a few cuts from Helpless Dreamer. Mello Music Volume One also shows off two new talents on prepping new projects with MMG in 2011 - Stik Figa, who hails from Topeka, Kansas and just released his collaborative EP, From The Top, with Oddisee and Has-Lo, who hails from Philadelphia.

DJ Blast (Montreal, Quebec) – Samba Love
What is the soundtrack of your life? DJ Blast’s soundtrack is so diverse he has to have lived a thousand lives. Born Jean Evens Bellevue, Blast grew up wanting to be not only the life of the party, but the architect of it as well. Although his upbringing wasn’t very musical, since an early age he sought after it, almost as a second nature.
His first contact to music started with the movie Beat Street in 84′. In his teenage years he learned the guitar but it was his 15th anniversary gift that changed the course of things: his first audio-mixer. It didn’t take long for Blast before the first gig and the first mixtape appeared making him the neighborhood go-to person for the hottest mixes and the brand new jams. But it didn’t stop there. Blast was a big enthusiast of the battle scene from the days of the new music seminar battles and the DMC. He practiced his craft until finally got a shot at the regional title and won for three years consecutive the Montreal DMC from 1998 to 2000 and also taking the 2000 Canadian team battle with his crew, the deceptikonz, sending them off to war with the best turntablists the world had to offer at the finals in the UK.
Thanks to the digital revolution that took the dj world by storm, Blast branched out of Hip Hop and embraced other musical styles. From Dance Music to Brazilian Baile funk, also delving into Bmore Club & Electro. His dj sets are a soulful blend of the hottest and the latest, period.
Blast’s success lies in the fact that he managed to juggle many aspects of deejaying without compromising any of them. He has sharpened his club dj skills, while making a name for himself in the remixing game with AV8records. On the production tip, he has blessed underground Top Dogs Main Flow & Frank N’ Dank with solid beats & has even landed credits on Bone-thugs & Harmony’s 2006 release “Thug Stories”. 2010, he is now releasing his first in a series of digital releases thru his own imprint Bhang Records, “Samba Love”. All this to let you know that Blast, a vet, a champ, a proud bumsquad dj, is always on the grind. www.thisisblast.com

The compilation began in 2003 as a handful of burnt CDs made by executive producer Troy Neilson for friends & family during the winter holidays. In 2005, Neilson made extra copies, which were sent to campus radio and other media outlets. Since then, the success of the compilation has continued to grow, while annually topping the campus radio rap charts.
“As an artist, I understand the struggle”, states Neilson. “For years I wrote reviews and features via HipHopCanada.com to provide exposure for Canadian rap artists. By 2005 I was starting to run short on time, so I explored other ways to give back to the community. That’s when the compilation series really began to take shape.”
Artists wishing to be considered for next year’s compilation are encouraged to submit their music via SonicBids ( link coming soon ) or by sending full CD to Brockway Ent, PO Box 90014, Ottawa, ON, K1V 1J8.

Magoolies music
“MAGoolies are a local Philadelphia group taking cues from both the current state of hip-hop and the essence of its past. The lyrical content is progressive however the beat selection allows them to be recognized by the mainstream. Composed of members from various sections of the city, the individualism of each rapper is still evident in each verse cohesively. The members are currently working on the “Turbo Man X Booster” & “This is your Brain on Kain” mixtapes and in the process of receiving rotation on onlinestreetradio.com along with their songs being played at a number of local Philly sneaker boutiques. You can follow them at @Charethqstory and @KidKain, they’ll be sure to reach out to any fans of their music and keep them posted on future projects”
