DJ JS-1 is in good spirits since the release of his latest album, No One Cares. So good, in fact, that he’s giving out not one but two free tracks for fans to enjoy this week: his newest single, “How We Think,” and a fresh studio mix of “Reppin’ NY” by none other than the legendary DJ Premier.
JS-1′s newest single, “How We Think,” is mellow joint with but comes well equipped with rough undertones courtesy of featured artists Sick Jacken of Psycho Realm, Slaine of La Coka Nostra, and Sabac Red of Non Phixion. “I reached out to the homie DJ Muggs and asked him to speak to Sick Jacken,” say JS-1. “Once Sick Jacken was down, I went to Slaine, who is one of my favorite artists, and then Sabac Red from Non-Phixion. DJ Eclipse helped everything go smoothly, too.” Along with an unsettling guitar riff and a hard drum loop, the song’s hook drives the message home. “I loved all their vocals but needed to come up with the perfect hook,” says JS-1. “I liked the line ‘You Know How We Think,’ because it’s quite obvious how myself and these MCs think. We do hardcore hip-hop, and never fold under the pressure to sell out and do cornball rap.”
It’s a tall task getting so many rappers involved with the making of one album, and so, just the same way JS-1 utilized the assistance of DJ Muggs and Eclipse for “How We Think,” he called in the help of a special friend, DJ Premier, to get in touch with Lil’ Fame and Bumpy Knuckles, who are both featured on “Reppin’ NY” along with Joell Ortiz. Now, JS-1 is releasing a special mix and master of the song, done by DJ Premier himself. “Once the song was recorded and I laid the cuts down, Premier asked me if he could mix and master that song,” explains JS-1. Busy schedules kept Premier’s mix off the album, but, Premo recently sat down behind the boards and added his signature studio magic. “As a man of his word, and someone who truly respects and enjoys good hip-hop, Preem still took the time to mix it, just so we can blast it out to all the DJs and real hip-hop fans,” says JS-1. “The mix is better now, of course. I can’t thank him enough for his help.”
DJ JS-1′s new album, No One Cares, is now available via a joint venture between Fat Beats Distribution and JS-1′s own Ground Original.

Numero Group’s latest release, Stone Coal White, was the most underground of all Dayton funk coming out in the early 1970s. Think the Curtis Mayfield soaked in Vietnam nightmares and LSD. They had to add “Rated X” to their name on bills in order to warn the average club-goer of their physchedelic and often risque stage performance. Soaked in delays and with a finger on the main pan- the album is raw and powerful.

Singer songwriter Kae Sun turned to his native Ghana for inspiration for his new EP, Outside the Barcode. The return to his homeland after nine years of living in Canada renewed his drive for creating the raw and non-commoditized artistic experiences that shaped his passion for music.
Outside the Barcode is an authentic and reflective collection of songs that showcase Kae’s growth as a songwriter, storyteller and guitarist. Recorded on 2-inch tape on a farm in Ontario the raw acoustic songs recall the sense of community and authenticity that inspired the tracks. Kae’s focus was to create a more shared listening experience rather than dictating his audience’s experiences.
Slakah the Beatchild releases his latest music video “The Cure”, the first single off his latest CD, Something Forever – Special Edition on BBE Music. Available currently as a hard copy only, the digital version of Something Forever – Special Edition will be available courtesy of BBE/K7 via all major digital music stores on July 25, 2011.
“The Cure”, edited and directed by Slakah The Beatchild, is the fourth and latest offering from his own Beatchild Films. The third release came earlier this month singer/songwriter Ayah released her thought provoking, Beatchild directed short film “When it Comes to You”. The short film style video for “The Cure” tells the compelling tale of ever-lasting love between Slakah the Beatchild and “The Cure”. “With “The Cure” I wanted a darker approach to what people might expect to see from hearing the song. I wanted to tell a story that would touch the viewer in a way that links the visuals to the song in a very strong way”, said Slakah the Beatchild about the inspiration behind his self-directed video.
The multi-talented young star’s stock has continued to rise since his song “B-Boy Beef” was featured in the BET debut episode of “The Game” in January 2011, which was watched by over 7.7 million viewers in the US and countless more around the world. In Spring 2011, Slakah the Beatchild embarked on a major European tour with stops in Sweden, The Netherlands, France, and The UK. Last month, the Beatchild appeared for the first time on Entertainment Tonight Canada to discuss his participation in the Congo Classrooms for a Brighter Future fundraising concert. At the event, Slakah dazzled the audience with a sneak preview performance featuring mega-talented singer/songwriter Justin Nozuka of their forthcoming single “Keep Breathing”, to be released later this year on the Beatchild’s newest project The Other Side of Tomorrow by The Slakadeliqs, an alter ego of the Beatchild. The debut video by The Slakadeliqs, “When the World Falls Apart” was shot in Toronto earlier this month and will be released in July.
“The Cure” is available now on the hardcopy CD Something Forever – Special Edition on BBE Music. A limited release of the digital CD will be available Friday July 1 exclusively on iTunes from BBE/K7. The worldwide digital release of Something Forever – Special Edition (BBE/K7) on all major digital music stores is slated for July 25, 2011.

My, my, my how PF time does fly! With the 3-year anniversary show just two short months away, the JUNE 2011 episode of PUSSYFOOT finds the finest of vocal varietists giddy as all get-out.
First up, militant mahatma EDDIE ROUSE chips-away at a perplexing trifecta of listener q’s in a media-conscious ‘Eddie’s Sagelike Advice’. At the risk of spoiling the surprise, let’s just say that the June segment concludes with a writer-in daring to go all ‘hardcopy’ on our rightfully rankled Sage–yielding typically-NSFW results. Next, as PF diehards will recall ’twas MISS SHELLEY who first broke the unfortunate news that the ‘Tiger Guru of Ranthambhore’ passed away in early March. Never one to rest on her animal care-taking laurels, this month’s ‘Shelley’s Obit’ spotlights a Miami snake man whose love for venom-spitting serpents was matched only by his passion for bootlegging. And–in an unprecedented move–cinematic know-it-all BLAKE EVERETT trades in the movieplex for a museum! We follow our savant to the fringes of East LA for a visit to the newly-reopened VINCENT PRICE MUSEUM.* While it’s not a Price shrine per se, ol’ Vinnie’s ghastly fingerprints are all over this institutional art space and cultural center. Find out more in a the first-ever (and uber-arty) ‘Blake at the Museum’.
Our keynote guest this month, WISE BLOOD, a fast-rising musician whose unique blend of sample-based soundscapes and Prince-like falsetto has the blogosphere abuzz. A little over a year ago, this Pittsburgh-based beatmaker unveiled his internet-only ep ‘+’ to little fanfare. Since that time, the gospel of Wise Blood has spread like wildfire while the performer himself has cleverly cultivated a cryptic persona…a refreshingly novel approach in the age of social media and full online disclosure. Now, as Wise Blood primes to drop a follow-up ep and subsequent full length, he sits down for an in-car interview with Matt and Matt to discuss his confrontational live show, the pitfalls of making digital music, and of course Pirates baseball.
All that, plus a playlist packed with power pills from the likes of Sam Gopal, John’s Children, Pin Group, and many more.

Naughty By Nature recently took a trip up to Beantown to perform with New Kids On The Block and Backstreet Boy at Fenway Park. The streets of Boston were buzzing with females of all ages waiting to relive their youth at this SOLD OUT concert. 40,000 screaming fans stood in the rain to watch the show and the energy was electric!!!
This is behind the scenes footage leading up to showtime. Stay tuned for the show footage coming next…..
AF THE NAYSAYER X LUKE ST. JOHN; the sound-scape supremacy that is AF THE NAYSAYER divined within the supernatural wordplay of LUKE ST. JOHN blends dreamlike sound-scapes with alchemical instrumentation. Imagine Jay Electronica and Prefuse 73 remixing the soundtrack for Chrono Trigger. Multi-platform experimentation on colorful complex chords,
detailed ambiguity reminiscent of scripture, and an overall upbeat event all explore the worlds of AF THE NAYSAYER and LUKE ST. JOHN.
Their first EP, Autodidact Vol. 1, [TBA] mixes melodic percussion with soulful FM synthesis; the upbeat, laid back glitch and 16-bit arcade sounds coalesce with filter-heavy samples and thoughtful folk-like lyrics producing music reminiscent of other rapper/producer collaborations such as Gang Starr, BLU & Exile, Panacea, and YSociety.
Starring Cassidy Lehrman and Shoshana Bush, GIA is a surreal story about a young woman who goes to a party in her own apartment. Papparazzi, avocados, Tyler Shields with a machine gun? and black lipstick, GIA looks at Hollywood through a cracked kaleidoscope, colors and liquor melting in the lens of the almighty Pier Pictures.

The challenge for a fighter is not only with his opponent. It starts with confidence — with knowing you can defeat all challengers — and that confidence starts with training to develop the skills necessary for the inevitable showdown. Nothing comes easy. Hard work, focus, determination, passion, patience; the heart of a lion. Working his way towards the title fight, Moe Green, and behind him the Out Crowd, proudly bring you, Lionheart, a 10-track EP being presented by the popular hip-hop website OnSMASH along with clothing brand BRWTNSS.
It’s been just over a year since the release of Green’s Rocky Maivia: Non-Title Match, and since, Moe’s been hard at work, taking himself from relative unknown to widely anticipated. And it’s exactly that fast career progression that inspired the title of the new EP. “The title, Lionheart, comes from WWF/WWE wrestler Chris Jericho,” explains Moe. “It represents the type of approach you have to take in this game. I dropped Rocky Maivia because it was me saying, ‘I’m coming up.’ But I’m here now – and I’m gonna kill it.”
With Lionheart, Moe Green’s growth is clear. At 10-tracks, not only is Lionheart tighter than RM, but the new project also finds Moe at his most personal, as he opens up and lets listeners into his world in a way he hasn’t before. “I’ve gotten better as an artist; I’m more confident in what I’m doing,” says Green. “And with that, I really got more personal and diverse on this project, too. I hope people can get a good idea of who, exactly, Moe Green is.”
That diversity shows up throughout the 10-track project. Tracks like “All The Money In The World,” which features fellow Bay artist Nio Tha Gift, display Moe’s ability to touch radio, while a song like “Masterpiece” shows off Green’s deadpan lyricism. The EP speaks to dealing with the ills of Vallejo on “OWTB,” and, with “Dreamin’,” Green touches on the true inspiration for his artistry. “Dreamin’,” really sums up what I do this for,” says Moe of the track that also features singer Amy Serrata. “I speak on my parents, and how I’m trying to get them into a better position. I just put a lot of the emotions I was feeling at the time into words.”

“The Star Spangled Banner” is just a song played at ball games. America’s real national anthem, the song that puts us all in the same place the second those transcendent opening notes rain down, is “September”, the 1978 smash by Earth Wind & Fire, the celebrated, Grammy-laden R&B band with residencies on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame, in the Rock ‘N Roll Hall of Fame and the hearts of millions as well as their native Chicago. EWF frontman based the bandname on his zodiac sign of Sagittarius, which has a primary elemental quality of Fire and seasonal qualities of Earth and Air. But it’s common knowledge from the second the band takes the stage that the lion’s share of the fire is supplied by Maurice’s little brother, bassist extraordinaire and force of nature Verdine White.
Verdine still remembers the first time he saw a bass guitar. “The instrument was standing alone in the corner of the orchestra class… tall, mysterious and majestic, so different from the others, it called me and the love affair began.” Not five years later his brother Maurice called him out to Los Angeles to come join EWF. Verdine never looked back. Today, Verdine’s technical yet soulful playing embodies the EWF aesthetic, and he is the most energetic element of a finely tuned music machine that has performed hits like “Shining Star”, “Serpentine Fire” and “Fantasy” for presidents, kings and sultans, as well as adoring crowds on every continent.
White takes his rightful place at Funk U in a lineup of bona fide bass icons like Les Claypool of Primus, Meshell Ndegeocello, Victor Wooten, John B. Williams, Beyonce bassist Divinity Roxx, Dennis Chambers, Thee Ram Jam, Frankie “Kash” Waddy, Bakithi Kumalo, P-Nut of 311, Blackbyrd McKnight, Public Enemy bassist Brian Hardgroove and Billy Bass. Exercises, lectures and tutorials are conducted on the ‘virtual campus’ at thefunkuniversity.com, boasting a wealth of content to engage beginners, intermediate and advanced players alike, as well as new classes for upright bass training. Exclusive Sponsors DR Strings, Warwick, AKG and Gig FX are offering scholarships this year for financially challenged students. Funk University is produced by SceneFour, the notorious L.A. creativity house responsible for projects with Al Gore’s Current TV, MTV-U, Nine Inch Nails, the RZA, Marilyn Manson, The Pixies, and Beck.

The Sun Cycle MC, C-Rayz Walz returns with his first “EVER” free full length project, as he connect with the UK’s Dub MD to bring you “All Blvck Everything: The Prelude” a 16 track concept album, an amuse-gruel for the main course”All Blvck Everything: The Album.” The Prelude is a funeral, that represents the death of C-Rayz Walz old ways (Business & Personal) that have proven unproductive in the past. It also symbolizes the death of the competitions careers…Enjoy the Wake!

Houston rap legend Pimp C sadly passed away three-and-a-half years ago, but the rapper/producer was so prolific that his music lives on. “Grippin’ On The Wood” features Bun B, the other half of his storied rap duo UGK, and the contributions of rising star Big K.R.I.T. The track, off of Pimp C’s posthumous album Still Pimpin, out July 12th on Rap-A-Lot, is an exemplary showcase of his talents and sound, with dewy organs, chittering wah guitar, and earthy bass coiling around a skittering drum beat. And all three MCs drop dynamite verses, with Pimp C’s inimitable alto and rhythmic delivery persistently shouting a brain-burrowing chorus.
“Flying Overseas,” a standout from Theophilus London’s Lovers Holiday EP, gets the sped-up Soul Clap remix treatment here for a brand new single. It transforms the original’s laidback melody-rap vibe into a minimal dance track where the casual keyboards and guitar, produced by Devonte Hynes of Lightspeed Champion and Blood Orange, are merged together over the rumble of a crisp house beat. Solange Knowles, also featured on the original, gets her voice doused in watery effects, but it adds to the danceability rather than detracts. Grab the full single with the EP version, Soul Clap EFunk remix and Toddla T remix on June 27 via This Is Music.
