Still living off the praise of fans, critics and peers as well as sales of last year’s instant classic R.E.K.S (Rhythmatic Eternal King Supreme), REKS now sets out to take the next step in his progression with his official full length follow up opus Straight, No Chaser. Once again teaming up with super-producer Statik Selektah, the two combine like a modern day Gang Starr for Straight, No Chaser.
REKS took the underground scene by storm with his debut LP, Along Came The Chosen (2001). The album featured production from a then eighteen year old Statik Selektah and featured collaborations with underground stalwarts: Pace-Won & Young Zee of the Outsiderz, 7L & Esoteric, J-Live and more. The critically acclaimed LP was featured in the Source, XXL, Vibe, and REKS was named to URB Magazine’s “Next 100”. The album’s single “Skills 101” reached #45 on the Billboard Singles chart, putting him on shows and tours with huge national acts. REKS finally released his highly anticipated sophomore LP, Grey Hairs, in 2008. The momentous album featured production from DJ Premier, Large Professor and ten-tracks from Statik and featured collaborations with Lil Fame of MOP, Consequence, Skyzoo, Termanology, Jon Hope and Big Shug. Grey Hairs lead to REKS being profiled by XXL Magazine in their “Show & Prove” section. REKS released the companion piece More Grey Hairs, appeared on Statik Selektah’s Spell My Name Right: The Album and released two more mixtapes (In Between The Lines Series Vol’s 1&2 which were hosted by Statik Selektah/DJ Green Lantern and DJ Ill Will respectively) and both mixtapes garnered thousands of downloads and widespread praise.
REKS has already set things in motion for Straight, No Chaser with lauded appearances at SXSW, an upcoming European tour and the recent leaks of the LP’s buzz-singles, “Chasin’” and “Autographs” which have migrated to every corner of the streets and internet alike. REKS laments “I feel Straight, No Chaser was necessary to add too the understanding of how well Statik and I come together and make a timeless pieces of work. I feel the album is varied in topic and focused on issues I feel still plague our society; its raw, its real, its refreshing and its REKS.

’85 is filled with boom bap production , soul samples and poetic lyrics; it’s quite reminiscent of hip-hop’s Golden Era with a present day feel. Already, their first single, “Made Up My Mind” has earned Wize Guyz a spot on Rhymesayers’ Redefinition Radio.

Earlier this month, 4th Pyramid released his new album, The Pyramid Scheme, his first since signing his label, Silk Ivory, to a joint venture with Lyrics to Go/Universal Music. Along with the album release, Pyramid also unleashed his latest video for “Can’t Stop,” an official single from The Pyramid Scheme. And now, as a thank you to fans that have supported the album, Pyramid is releasing a bonus song, one that doesn’t show up on the original album, for free.
The song, “Simmy Auto,” is produced by Simahlak, whose production should be described as nothing less than full-body. The hard-hitting, bass-heavy track is driven forward by a gritty guitar line and sets the tone for 4th Pyramid, who matches the beat step-for-step with a bouncy flow and swift wordplay. “At the time, I had taken a little break from recording in the studio so I wanted to really show that I could still deliver some super lyrical shit,” explains Pyramid. “Even the title of the song is a play on words, switching the usual Semi-Auto to incorporate Simahlak’s nickname, ‘Simmy.’”
4th Pyramid has worked with Simahlak on several other tracks and projects, and has developed a respect for the man’s work ethic. “I remember having to do an insane amount of takes before we settled on this version,” recalls Pyramid. “When you work with a guy like Simahlak, it’s like being in the dojo; he holds you to the highest of standards.”
Earlier this month, MUMBLS released his Hella Novellas mixtape. The Berkeley rapper will be hitting the road next month, opening alongside Fashawn as part of his mentor Andre Nickatina’s nationwide Where’s My Money? Tour, but first, he’s keeping things rolling from the mixtape with the latest visual from the project, for the track “Spellbound.”
Videographer Tyson Wade Johnston conceived the concept for the video, which was directed by Ben Griffin from Prime Zero, who also offered direction for the equally trippy video for previous single “Parachute.” The video captures MUMBLS in a cab on his way to a party, but this was no ordinary cab ride. “The whole video is just a mobile party in the back of a cab,” describes MUMBLS. “We’re in the back with bottles of booze and no seatbelts on, and the cab driver was swangin’ the shit out of that cab.”
Illicit recreation serves as a recurring theme throughout Hella Novellas, but do so, perhaps, in few places more than they do on “Spellbound.” “The song has that druggy party vibe to it,” explains MUMBLS, “so we thought the theme should be, ‘Hey, look how much fun I’m having!’”
Critically-acclaimed filmmaker Will Feagins, Jr. teamed up with Clan Destined to capture the feel of the duo’s track-turned-interlude “The Language, Pt. 2″. Clan D picks up where they left us with their debut album ABBRACADAMN!!! and took to the turntables to scratch their vocals back and forth. To take this audio event to an even higher level, they captured the video with help of Serato Scratch Live technology in order to manually scratch the clips of themselves and others to the tune. Feagins was recently awarded first place in the Atlanta Film Festival Short Cuts Film Contest sponsored by Creative Loafing in not only the critics’ choice category, but the viewers’ choice as well, for his short documentary entitled Underexposed: Indie Hip-Hop in Atlanta. Clan Destined’s latest LP, Self Titled, was also given heavy praise in Creative Loafing last year, receiving a perfect 5 out of 5 stars.

Kool Keith is excited to announce that his forthcoming album, Love & Danger, will be released June 5th via Junkadelic Music, with worldwide distribution via Fat Beats. To celebrate the announcement, the Bronx native and founding member of Ultramagnetic MCs, is releasing a remix of the album’s lead single “New York,” now featuring Agallah Don Bishop and NYM.
A true legend, Kool Keith has a career that spans nearly three decades. In 1984, he started the Ultramagnetic MCs with Ced Gee, TR Love and Moe Love. The group was known for its off-the-wall sampling techniques and left field lyrics. Both were traits Keith took with him when he launched his solo career in 1995, under the moniker Dr. Octagon, one of the numerous alter egos fans of his work have grown to love.
Kool Keith’s new album, Love & Danger, which is produced entirely by DJ Junkaz Lou, allowed Keith to experiment with his talents even further, and also to display a wide range of emotions. “The Love & Danger album was a chance for me to be myself and do different things,” explains Keith. “It was me going through all kinds of temperatures – my highest of coldness to my highest of hotness, which is a lot like love and danger.”
With his desire to display emotion, Keith’s approach to artistic progression has shifted; he’s more focused on the lateral progression that comes with experimentation than he is with trying to trump his previous efforts. “I’ve been at my highest peak of recording for the last 10 years,” remarks Keith, “I never got better at rap, because I was always better in rap, regardless.”
That excellence appears throughout Love & Danger’s 15 tracks. “New York,” finds Keith paying homage to the city that made him. Elsewhere, “The Game Is Free,” features a guest verse from Megabone, and examines the idea of privacy in a society driven by ever-present media. Other songs on the album include features from Keith Murray, and more, while album’s closing track, “Goodbye Rap,” is Kool Keith’s sign-off to the game he has been a major part of for a very long time. “This is probably my last project,” announces Keith, “You just got the last of the vocals of me. I’m quitting the game. Goodbye, rap.”

Richmond, CA native IamSu! can be called a lot of things — rapper, producer, songwriter — but “miseducated” is not one of them. Last year, the 22-year-old produced, penned the hook, and provided a scene stealing 16 for fellow Bay Area newcomner LoveRance’s smash-hit single “Up,” which is currently a nationwide Top 10 single in two formats and boasts an official remix featuring 50 Cent and several unofficial remixes featuring everyone from Chris Brown to Roscoe Dash to T.I. to Bow Wow. Most recently, IamSu! walked into Fader Fort just as The-Dream was singing his own renditon of the song.
On The Miseducation of IamSu!, which he released in December 2011 to serve as an appetizer for KILT, Su! has been described as having the confidence of fellow Cali rapper Dom Kennedy and the smooth delivery of Nipsey Hussle. The video for “HBKJoe Beat,” named partly after his clique, HBK Gang, features Su! and fellow member P-Lo celebrating the rites of spring by goofing off in the sun-soaked backstreets of California while two PYT’s ride on the handlebars of their bikes.
Although Su! shouldered much of the production on Miseducation, he handed the duties for “HBKJoe Beat” off to HBK affiliate HBKJoe, who laced Su! with a lazy, saxphone-sampling beat that perfectly complements the low-key, playful video, which was directed by Chris Simmons.
“HBKJoe Beat,” is a rare, light-hearted track from Miseducation, which showcases a more serious tone with tracks like “Ralph Lauren Rugby S**t,” and freestyles over the Wu-Tang classic “Ice Cream,” and The Clipse’s “I’m Not You.”
Su! is currently readying the release of KILT, his next album, which will also be released for free.

19 year old Conor Maynard is the next big thing out of the UK, armed with a fresh, young style and an energetic pop R&B sound. Radio stations and TV channels have been adding his debut single and video, “Can’t Say No,” to their playlists in ever-increasing numbers. BBC Radio 1′s Scott Mills recently crowned the song with the coveted ‘Record of the Week’ title, joining hits by Nicki Minaj, LMFAO, and David Guetta.
Conor’s growing fan base, known as ‘Mayniacs,’ lived up to their name earlier this month by stopping traffic, singing along to “Can’t Say No,” and deafening bystanders with their screaming when Conor played his third-ever gig at the sold-out Islington Academy in London. The Daily Star said Conor “was swamped by hysteria as the self-dubbed Mayniacs vied for his attention and swooned each refrain of the teen idol’s debut. Conor Maynard is hell-bent on a meteoric rise.”
The young superstar-in-the-making was recently flown out to Miami by Pharrell Williams (N.E.R.D. front man and hit-maker for Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake, Gwen Stefani and many more) to record new tracks for his debut album. The video for “Can’t Say No,” has had nearly 1.8 million views on Youtube with 750,000 in just one week.
“Can’t Say No” is out on April 16th through Parlophone Records, with the album to follow later this Summer. For more on Conor, visit his official site at conor-maynard.com.
