Within music culture, it seems like the future has sounded like the original Tron soundtrack since before science fiction movies even gained popularity. Trans Am, one of the best ’90s post-rock bands, always took a different route. Using driving Krautrock-oriented drums, robotic vocals and a sense of dynamics that are more punk than club-ready, “Futureworld” remains a hypnotic ode to the way we hope things sound 40 years from now. Originally released in 1999, Thrill Jockey is re-releasing Futureworld in celebration of its 20th anniversary on September 13 with a new mastering job and two digital bonus tracks, including an outtake mixed by James Murphy.
UK Funky/Britdub MC Roots Manuva demoed a song. Wily electromaster Toddla T liked it. So much so, that he appropriated it, thereby opening up the floodgates for a slew of gassed-up remixes. Today, Roots Manuva takes it back. “Watch Me Dance,” in its most unadulterated form, is part squishy bass ballad, part freaky-deaky hip-hop, and fully danceable. Find it on 4everevolution, Roots’ new album dropping via Big Dada on September 26.

Meanwhile as the rapper prepares to release his new album, fans have the opportunity to see him perform live on the international Doggumentary Tour with Snoop Dogg, throughout the year.

With additional production from Daz Dillinger, Tmg Music Group (Fly2k prod), Tweet, Jelly Roll, 1500, and Stones Throw Records artist Dam Funk, the forthcoming high-octane album has been generating buzz amongst music aficionados since tracks “Best Kept Secret” and “G-Funk Martian”, were leaked.
Soopafly is also currently working on new projects with Short Khop, Latoiya Williams, Mark Morrison, and he’s now back working with Dr. Dre, on the highly anticipated album, Detox, “I’m in studio working with Dr. Dre again. Making sure this Detox sound got my imprint on it too. You won’t be disappointed” says Soopafly.
C.E.O.of his own production company Fly2k Productions, Soopafly, real name Priest Josef Brooks, met Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre during his teens, proving himself with his keyboard skills, which lead to playing keyboards for Dr. Dre and Ice Cube on “Natural Born Killaz”, from the Murder Was The Case Soundtrack. He was soon signed to Death Row Records, and assigned to produce on classic albums such as; Dogg Food by Tha Dogg Pound, Tha Doggfather by Snoop Dogg, and All Eyez On Me by 2Pac.
With two independent albums under his belt, hit singles such as “Like It Or Not”, “Put The Monkey In It” with Daz Dillinger, and “I Don’t Hang” from A Thin Line Between Love & Hate Soundtrack, the multi-platinum music producer continues to solidify his position as one of the most respected rappers/producers in the industry. With his enigmatic charisma and kinetic flow stamped on every track, Long Beach’s original rapper will release Best Kept Secret under his own imprint Fly2k Records on August 30, 2011.
According to Van, “It’s about being misunderstood and mislabeled. The cold space of being alive and fulfilled and cut out of stone”.

Riding the success of her single “Gucci Gucci,” Kreayshawn has announced that she’ll be and directing Red Hot Chili Peppers’ music video for “The Adventures Of Rain Dance Maggie” from their forthcoming album I’m With You. Kreayshawn has also announced dates for her upcoming mini-tour this August, which includes headlining dates in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, along with a performance at the POPPED! Music Festival in Philadelphia on September 24th. Tickets for the tour, along with limited edition city-specifc t-shirt packages, can be purchased now at www.Kreayshawn.com. Amidst all of these latest developments, Kreayshawn has released a new song, “Rich Whores.”
Leaked last week exclusively through her website as a thank you to fans, “Rich Whores” shines a spotlight on girls who, despite having money, shop at thrift stores. “When you go to fashion school in LA and San Francisco, there’s a lifestyle that rubs off on you,” says Kreayshawn. “I wanted to make a jam for all those girls, who sniff hella powder, shop at thrift stores and get the party crackin’.”
Atop trunk rattling bass, fuzzy blips, and pizzicato violin loops, Kreayshawn shout-outs everyone from pop icons The Spice Girls to Southern rap staple Gucci Mane. With a slow and steady pace, Kreayshawn playfully pokes fun at her targets with lyrics like “What up, bitch, I heard you to to FIDM / What up bitch, I see you dancing with no rhythm, ” and “Her boyfriend’s in an indie band and has a mustache / The music’s fucking lame, he’s looking like a muskrat.” Despite the cheeky jabs, Kreayshawn’s confident that all types of girls will dig it. “Girls can relate, they know who I’m talking about,” she says, adding, “and the girls who I’m talking about will like it just as much.

Souls Of Mischief are excited to announce that they will be one of premier performing acts for the 2011 Rock The Bells Festival. The legendary group, comprised of MCs A-Plus, Phesto, Opio and Tajai, will be performing at each of the scheduled Rock The Bells dates. The four shows will be on August 20th in Los Angeles, August 27th in San Francisco, September 3rd in New York, and September 10th in Boston. This is the 8th time Guerilla Union has put on the acclaimed summer hip-hop festival, and the first time Souls of Mischief will be performing as a part of the traveling festival.
Making things more exciting, not only will all members of Souls Of Mischief be accounted for, but they will be performing their most celebrated album, ’93 Til Infinity, in its entirety for the first time. “It’s going to be really cool to do the album full out for the first time,” says Tajai. “We’ve been touring for the last 20 years, so we’ve performed some of the songs a lot, but performing the full album will be an entirely new experience.” And the album’s performance is anticipated to be as epic as it is ephemeral, according to Tajai, who adds, “It’s going to be a real treat for the fans too, since we probably won’t do it ever again.”
Other notable acts will also be joining Souls Of Mischief, performing their own classics in their entirety, including Lauryn Hill playing The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, Nas performing Illmatic, Mobb Deep running through The Infamous, and many more. “Guerilla Union is providing the ultimate platform for real hip-hop that isn’t happening anywhere else,” says Tajai. “Seeing names like Mobb Deep, GZA, and Nas… that’s some real army jacket rap! It takes me back to an era when New York was still raw.” Along with these show-stopping performances, Talib Kweli and Mos Def will be reuniting to perform as the duo Black Star and Wu-Tang Clan visionary RZA will be hosting a “36 Chambers Stage,” to discuss everything from Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) to martial arts to new acts.
In addition to reuniting for this special string of Rock The Bells performances, Souls Of Mischief members A-Plus and Opio are hard at work putting the finishing touches on a variety of their own projects. Up first, A-Plus will be releasing a series of four EP’s, each sampling and revisiting the catalog of a legendary rock group. The first EP will take on the music of the Red Hot Chili Peppers with a project called Pepperspray. Opio is also putting the finishing touches on project, his sophomore solo LP Vulture’s Wisdom 2.0, which will be released in the coming months via the crew’s Hieroglyphics Imperium label.
Multi-platinum and chart-topping R&B singer Mark Morrison is gearing up for the release of his third full-length studio album ‘I Am What I Am’, to be lead by the first single also titled “I Am What I Am”, due this summer/fall.
“I Am What I Am” is a delicious slice of soul, with Mark’s distinctive vocal used to it’s maximum effect. Last month marked 15 years, since Morrison’s single “Return of the Mack” reached #1 in the UK.
Born in Germany, to Barbadian parentage, Morrison lived in the UK, before moving to Florida, at a young age. His debut album in ’96, ‘Return of the Mack’, became a multi-platinum success, selling 3 million copies worldwide. The lead single “Return of the Mack” exploded, reaching #1 in several countries including the UK. It opened the US market for him the following year, spending a remarkable 41 weeks on the US Billboard singles chart, where it peaked at #2, and made the Billboard Hot 100 “Songs of the Year” chart. The album made him the first artist in British pop history to have five Top 10 singles from their debut album. These included “Trippin’,” “Horny,” “Moan & Groan,” and “Crazy,” which also spent 7 weeks on the US Billboard singles chart.
Although his career was going well, Morrison was constantly in trouble with the law. In ’97 he was imprisoned, the same year (coincidentally) he received four Brit nominations, a Mercury Music Prize nomination, an MTV Europe award nomination and 5 MOBO nominations (including winning best R&B), as “Return of the Mack” began to climb its way to #2 on the Billboard charts receiving platinum status en-route. His post-prison release “Who’s The Mack?” hit the Top-20.
Morrison returned in ’06 with two well received independent releases, “Just A Man”, and “Innocent Man” featuring DMX, which appeared in sample form on “Innocent (Misunderstood)” by rapper Cassidy, and reached #3 on Billboard’s Bubbling Under R&B/Hip-Hop Singles chart in ’08.
The new album, ‘I Am What I Am’, which drops this fall, was written entirely by Morrison, and is set to include production from renowned record producers Mike City, and The Co-Stars.
