MMA Expo Forced to Cancel April 10-11 Event in BC
So sorry, MMA Fans… but they killed the show.Bottom line? In my 20 years in the exhibition and show business I have never heard of anything such as this cancellation fiasco. Without any notice, forewarning or discussion, the City of Abbotsford put a stop to MMA Expo at their TRADEX Exhibition Centre. The reason give, delivered in an email just 15 working days before the event, was “concern over the possibility of rival gang member attendance”. ???
In my opinion this was a totally bogus reason with absolutely no basis in fact.
We scrambled all week to recover, found another venue, signed another contract for space at the Pacific National Exhibition and began rebuilding the event in the new location. The following day when I refused to agree to what I considered to be unreasonable restrictions on the format of MMA Expo show floor feature areas – i.e. no grappling tournaments, only ONE person demos allowed???, amongst other things – we were denied the opportunity to proceed with MMA Expo at the PNE as well. Brutal.

Steve Nash Foundation presents Showdown in Downtown
Players scheduled for star studded Vancouver event and AfterParty at Pop Opera
Two-time NBA MVP, Steve Nash, confirmed today the participation of celebrated basketball and soccer players for the latest instalment of the Steve Nash Foundation’s Showdown series — the Showdown in Downtown, in Vancouver. Baron Davis from the LA Clippers, and this summer’s first round draft pick, Hasheem Thabeet, are scheduled to play alongside Nash.
Following the success of his Showdown in Chinatown in New York City in June, the Showdown in Downtown promises a high-energy, exciting 8-a-side soccer match between teams of NBA and professional soccer players, including select players from the Vancouver Whitecaps FC men’s team and Whitecaps FC Residency program.
The Showdown in Downtown kicks off on September 19th, 2009, in David Lam Park in Yaletown. The free community event will support the work of the Steve Nash Foundation, www.stevenash.org. Exhilarating entertainment is planned throughout the day with a blowout AfterParty at Pop Opera, hosted by Donnelly Nightclubs and the Donnelly Fund to follow that evening.
