Toronto DJ/Production Duo Circle Research Sign To URBNET

cr_gardiner-express_streetCircle Research, the globally acclaimed Toronto DJ/production duo, have signed with URBNET, Canada’s pre-eminent urban music label. Their latest LP Gardiner Express is the group’s third, coming on the heels of their much-loved Toronto hip-hop mix show (now a popular podcast on the web) and stellar production work with luminaries such as Ivana Santilli and K-OS.

Appearing just a year after the duo’s sophomore effort, Who?, was released on Germany’s Melting Pot Records, Cricle Research’s newest album marks a clear evolution in the group’s unmistakable sound. For Nik and Gil, the title Gardiner Express doesn’t just refer to the main highway connecting downtown Toronto to its uptown counterparts, it also represents a state of mind.

“We were at the stage where we were naming the songs,” Nik explains, “and I suggested 401 (a highway that connects northern Toronto) but Gil was like, ‘Gardiner Express–” Gil adds — “From there, we realized this name had encompassed the overall feeling of the album. It reminds us when we were growing up in Etobicoke (a Toronto suburb), zooming down the highway towards the city on a Saturday night, blasting whatever was in heavy rotation at the time.”

While the classic analog boom-bap vibe of their original efforts is still the focus, the duo feel Gardiner Express marks their most personal music to date. The songs touch on themes of love and alienation in the 21st century — coolly aided by the duo’s recent embrace of some fresh beat-making tricks and technology.

For instance, it’s out with the familiar Pro Tools rig and in with the Akai MPC 6000 sampling drum machine (a long-time J-Dilla favorite). And while the beat-loving duo aren’t making plans to audition for Canadian Idol just yet, they’ve added a new wrinkle to the mix.

“Vocoders and talk-boxes are cool,” says Nik. “They let guys like us - who dont rap or sing - express ourselves vocally, while adding a distinctly electronic edge that compliments our music”

Circle Research’s third album Gardiner Express will be released on URBNET, Tuesday, April 20, 2010.

CRASH KARMA’s Debut Single “Awake” Top 10 Canadian Rock Chart for 14 weeks -

Fast-rising rock group CRASH KARMA will hit the road to coincide with the release of their debut album March 16th. The tour begins March 8th in Barrie, ON and criss-crosses the continent before finishing up in Regina, SK, on April 10th.

CRASH KARMA’s members are no stranger to success, consisting of former I Mother Earth singer Edwin, ex-Our Lady Peace guitarist Mike Turner, The Tea Party drummer Jeff Burrows and former Zygote bassist Amir Epstein. All of these respective groups notched up record sales in the millions, multiple Juno and MuchMusic Video Awards and became household names. “Awake” is, of course, a perfectly appropriate title for the pulsating debut single.

The disc was recorded at Toronto’s Pocket Studios and produced by Turner, and came together on what started their own respective bands – dreams and great songs. Their first national tour will showcase the powerful raw energy of what each member does best, transcending the sum of their parts - Edwin’s roof-shaking lung power, Burrow’s grooves, Turner and Epstein’s eye-popping and infectious’ playing with visceral power, all leading to what radio listeners already know – Crash Karma are one of the most exciting groups around.

A dedication to 3 of the most brilliant contributors to Hip-Hop.

This song was released on the iTunes version of Let The Children Die
(urbnet.2009). Not on the retail version.

My apologies if anyone is offended by the language. I decided to leave
the verses as they were written. Altering them would have been a major
insult to the art they created.

Brasstronaut Announce Full Canadian Tour

343llkzin support of their debut LP Mt. Chimaera out March 2nd

Like their hometown of Vancouver, British Columbia, Brasstronaut is hard to pin down.  Their debut album, Mt. Chimaera, possesses qualities of the fjord-flanked city’s unpredictable character. Since forming in 2007,n Brasstronaut has steadily acquired the hands necessary to fuse a diverse range of genres and this follow-up to their Old World Lies EP represents the first statement by the band’s definitive six-piece line-up.  Vocalist and
keyboardist Edo Van Breemen is joined by a roster fluent in trumpet, lap steel, flugelhorn and the seldom-heard EWI (a wind synthesizer), among others.

Emerging from the west-coast city’s rain-soaked culture of underground venues and cheap sushi, the band whole-heartedly embraces the pirate lifestyle of constant touring and have built credibility on the road, having played with bands from Belle Orchestre to Why?, and in international festivals like Reykjavik’s Iceland Airwaves ‘09, where they appeared
on-stage with the brass section from Sigur Ros. Amidst their upcoming Canadian tour, they are currently slated to appear at South By Southwest 2010 on the official Pop Montreal curated showcase, and the Sled Island Dayparty (details below!)

Don’t miss Brasstronaut’s upcoming CBC Radio 3 session that will be broadcast online at http://radio3.cbc.ca/ and on SIRIUS channel 86 at 8pm PST on Monday, Feb 15th. See them live at their Cultural Olympiad kick-off show in Vancouver on February 18th.

THE BURIED LIFE is #1 on MTV

buried-life-0563Starring four Canadians, new series records the most-watched series premiere ever on MTV

Watch the first four episodes online now at mtv.ca/theburiedlife

On their list of 100 things to do before they die, the quartet of Canadians from MTV’s THE BURIED LIFE crossed off #53 in style – Start a TV Show. Final data from BBM Canada reveals the January 18 premiere drew in a record-setting 220,000 total viewers, making it the most-watched series premiere ever for any program on MTV in Canada. Additionally, the premiere ranked #1 (P12-34) in its timeslot against all Canadian and U.S. specialty channels, capturing almost 170,000 viewers in the target demo*.

On Monday, Feb. 15 at 10 p.m. ET/PT, the group of friends from Victoria, B.C. travel to South Central L.A. and get buc-wild as they cross item #33 off their list – Compete in a Krump Competition. During their time in The City of Angels, they befriend a former gang member and help get his positive rap song played on a popular Los Angeles radio station.

Viewers can watch the first four episodes now, online at mtv.ca/theburiedlife. All-new episodes of THE BURIED LIFE air Mondays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.

You can’t “friend” a dream. You can’t “download” your first kiss. You can’t “tag” happiness. With that in mind, Duncan Penn, Ben Nemtin, Dave Lingwood, and Jonnie Penn made a list of 100 things to do before they die. THE BURIED LIFE showcases these four Canadians’ extraordinary attempts to accomplish all of these items – large and small – and check them off the list. The foursome also made a promise to themselves – for every goal they achieve, they pay it forward and help a complete stranger discover, organize, or attempt their wildest dreams. As they travel from town to town on their purple bus Penelope, the four race to make the implausible happen, all before leaving on their next adventure.

FIRST ‘AFRICA’…NOW THE WORLD! Karl Wolf poised for International Superstardom!

m_d4983ab190634879bda749960b8cb604“Africa”, “Carrera”, “Yalla Habibi” - all three songs have become monster hits for Lebanese-Canadian singer/songwriter Karl Wolf.  Now, Karl is ready to build on this success with his next single “Hurting” which is being delivered to radio stations across the country this week.  ”Hurting” shows a whole new, serious side of Karl: it’s a powerful song that’s very close to his heart and shows signs of being another out of the box smash. Accompanying the track is Karl’s best video to date, which stars Nicole Holness from MTV Canada and which multi-talented Karl directed himself. You can catch a sneak peek here:

2009 was a stellar year for Karl at Canadian radio as evidenced by his 3 nominations at the Canadian Radio Music Awards: Best New Group/Solo Artist of the Year (Mainstream AC), Best New Group/Solo Artist of the Year (Hot AC), and Fan’s Choice. Karl will be performing at the Awards, which are taking place at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto as part of Canadian Music Week 2010; the awards will be handed out during a gala luncheon.

In addition to the CRMA nominations, Wolf has also been nominated for three SOBA (Sounds of Blackness Awards) in Quebec: Anglophone Single of the Year ”Africa”, Anglophone Best Artist or Group and Anglophone Best R&B Artist or Group. Those awards will be presented on February 28th at the Outremont Theatre in Montreal.

Last, but certainly not least, Karl has announced that  he has just recently signed a deal with Universal Republic Records to release his album Nightlife in the United States. Speaking about the signing, Avery Lipman (Co-President and COO of Universal Republic Records), said: “We’re thrilled to be working with Karl Wolf. His distinctive sound and international appeal makes him a force to be reckoned with.  The entire company joins me in welcoming Karl Wolf to Universal Republic Records.”

The first single from the US release is “Africa”, which is already being added at radio stations across the country. “Africa” was a triple platinum, Top 10 hit in Canada and will surely repeat that triumph south of the border. Coupled with his successes in Dubai, Japan, Lebanon, Egypt, and of course, Canada, Karl is poised to take the rest of the world by storm!

Introducing Indielove.ca Radio

1017100% Canadian independent music playlist!!!!

In a radio market, overloaded with repetitive music, saturated with American artists and predictable content, there is finally another option for Canadian music fans.  Indielove.ca has been unapologetically spinning 100% Canadian content since it’s inception in 2007, and has never looked back. Launched on Canada Day in 2007, Indie Love (indielove.ca) now has some 3,000 acts ranging from country to hip-hop on its roster, and is one of the fastest growing destinations online for Canadian content. Operating outside the confines of commercial radio, Indielove.ca has the freedom, and the balls to spin whatever it wants, whenever it wants, and has become the fastest growing outlet for emerging Canadian artists, venues, promoters, and fans alike.  With a wide array of edgy and provocative hosts and shows, Indielove.ca is quickly proving that you don’t need to be ordinary to be extraordinary.  Forget everything you know about traditional broadcasting, the future of Canadian radio is here.

We are dedicated wholeheartedly to developing a Canadian scene which is accessible to artists, promoters, venues and indie fans. With Indielove.ca as the cornerstone of an entire movement, we plan to initiate several projects in 2010 which will promote all genres of Canadian independent music. We recognize that our music is our culture, and our developing sound is very regional. Promoting and sharing our music can only be a benefit to Canada. No Flaw Reggae – Thursday 7pm – 9pm EST

Raised in Kingston, Jamaica MC Flawless grew up exposed to music from an early age. He would find himself laying in bed at nights listening to the distant sound systems riveting hard driving beats and vocals into his young physic. Artist like Israel vibrations, Burning Spear, Bob Marley, Marcia Griffith, Buju Banton, Sizzla, Garnet Silk, Bounty Killa, Beenie Man and so many more fueled his passion for music. No doubt, there were tuff times. He felt that change could be made with the music. So was inspired to form an idea hence putting meaning to F.L.A..W.L.E.S.S which means; facilitating love amongst worthless lives especially societies scum’s.

Coming to Canada a country known not only for just the cold, Great Lakes and moose but also for the humanitarianism that lives in its citizens. “Since I was always hearing Jamaican reggae artist I was instantly surprised that Canada had reggae scene.” Search after search proved that there are so many talented reggae artists across Canada. So many of them said they left to find greener pastures because there music wasn’t getting exposed. Flawless knew he could help, for he saw no flaw in the music. The answer was simple; find them a home, a place to express their unique experience.

Born and raised in Barbados, Dj Sabu immigrated to Montreal where he founded his own sound system “Love Rock Sound”. Then he migrated to Toronto and attended Trebas Institute and studied Audio Engineering to better his craft.  While working as a sales representative at Steve’s Music store and spinning at local bars he came upon an opportunity to work with Indie Love Radio. “Accepting the position with gratitude and the love for music I can only look forward for a bright future for Indie Love radio and the Canadian music industry. Love and respect goes out to all Canadian artist, producers, managers, and whoever loves, feels, respects, and breathes music. JAH Bless!”
