ADMISSION IS A BLANKET – BLANK-FEST COMES TO TORONTO TO HELP HOMELESS

serving_charity_picsA night of great music during a renowned festival. The cost of admission? A blanket or comforter in any condition. Blank-Fest Toronto will be collecting blankets at the El Mocambo during INDIE WEEKon Thursday, October 14, 2010. The donations will be distributed to Toronto’s Serving Charity to aid the homeless during Toronto’s winter months, which are known for having temperatures well below zero. Those who are homeless run the risk of frostbite and possible death due to overexposure.

2010 marks the 13th Anniversary for the Blank-Fest Concert Series, and this year it is expanding to Toronto with the help of the international festival INDIE WEEK. New York City indie rock veteran Kenn Rowell of The Baghdaddios founded Blank-Fest in 1997, and has since organized the annual NYC fundraiser.

In the past, Rowell says that Blank-Fest NYC has raised more than 6,000 total donations that have been distributed to the homeless in the New York City area and has inspired similar efforts in New Jersey, Manhattan, Montreal and Nottingham, UK. Among the many distinguished artists who have performed at past international Blank-Fests are: Rothberg (EMI), Buddy Cage (Grateful Dead), Marc Rizzo (Soulfly) and Meg Griffin (Sirius Radio).

The Peace Series event

30683_780150584866_5515296_43573521_1421281_nHere are the Cole’s notes of our story
The event is called The Peace Series  www.thepeaceseries.com and the cause is to raise money for a privately funded project in Namuwongo, Uganda- where newly orphaned children have been picked from the street after their parents have either been murdered (before their eyes) or have died of AIDS.
The two teacher’s who started this program are currently renting out a single classroom at a very tiny school called St. Henry’s in Namuwongo, where we are currently doing our best to support the education of 15 children- including 2 meals a day, new shoes and school supplies. Most importantly, getting them off of the dirt roads in and into a classroom where they’re taught basic literacy skills and can try and gain back a feeling of stability.
This all started because my very best friend, Ruby, went and volunteered 2 years ago through an internship at McGill- and when she returned I could just see the passion and desperation in her eyes and she begged friends to rally together and pool their spare funds for these kids. The pictures from her trip did me over- and while I’ve been quick to shell out up to $300 for a pair of shoes- it only costs that much to feed and clothe one of these children for an entire year! We don’t realize enough.
This is our first fundraising attempt- – the idea came to mind when I went to surprise visit my girlfriend in Ohio, after she had just written the LSAT.
That night we ended up on her rooftop, drinking and dancing and decided to start a painting with what we had. In the end, we were quite impressed with our final product , a gigantic, multicolored peace symbol–and a lightbulb went off!
“What if we sold this painting- and gave the money to Ruby to send to the kids?”   as we lay on our back staring up at the sky we thought “what if we created a series of these paintings and gave the money to Ruby?”  and so “THE PEACE SERIES” was born.
It has grown above and beyond our expectations- as well as into more than we can chew since receiving a great amount of positive feedback and support.  Though often times people don’t put their money where their mouths are- we’re deeply grateful for the awareness we’re raising and no matter the financial out come-  some is better than none.
That being said, our goal is to raise $30,000- in order to send a classroom full of 30 kids for the full 3 year program.
Unfortunately in the past- people have come forward to sponsor a child but have then fallen mindless of their promise and after one year have let go of their generous obligation which then puts the kid back on the street and worse off for going at all. We want to prevent that this go round.
We’re only a team of two- and if I’ve learned anything, its that next time we’ll need a committee!  No doubt.  The correspondence alone is endless.
Anyway…
Nothing like some local artists, good music and oysters mid-week ;)

Sky’s The Limit delivers 2000th computer!

stl_2000th_computerWe are proud to announce that Brittiany was the 2000th recipient of an STL laptop on April 9th, 2010. Below, Brittiany describes how not having a computer was impacting her life and school work:

“My name is Brittiany, and I am an honour roll student attending Secondary School in Brampton, Ontario! I am currently in my last year of high school and intend on graduating with double honour.

However, my educational journey has been a trying one, as I am currently without a computer. I have struggled on numerous occasions trying to find different ways to access a computer, just so I wouldn’t lose any marks because my work wasn’t typed. I have also not been able to keep up with many class assignments, and have been at a disadvantage when I am assigned a task, as these tasks all require a computer.

I have now also come to the realization that university is not going to be any easier than high school and in fact, having a computer is a definite must for all students. I cannot imagine not having access to a computer for my future endeavors as an athlete, mediator, singer, poet, and so much more. As our world becomes more and more dependent on technology, it is evident that eventually I would have been left behind whilst attempting to hand write my work.

STL has given me a tool that has played a large role in being the first in my family to attend university and make my family proud. My heart is filled with gratitude.”

Jamie Hector is Moving Mountains

meetthefounder-jhAs you may know, Moving Mountains Inc. is a Brooklyn based 501c3 Non Profit Organization founded by Jamie Hector, a well respected actor best known for his roles on HBO’s The Wire and NBC’s HEROES. Jamie was born and raised in Brooklyn and wanted to create opportunities that specifically target urban youths interested in the performing arts and to provide creative development and a platform for them to showcase their talents. His original goal was to create a theater company where youths could strengthen and showcase their talents while instilling in them, life skills that build character. However, because of the growing number of participants from the surrounding boroughs, Moving Mountain has blossomed into a more diversified organization with a theater company, a film division, music division, and a dance and personal development component that focuses on individual needs, be it academic, health, etc.
The Moving Mountains organization opened it’s doors to youth between the ages of 10 to 20 a little over a year ago using the rehearsal space provided by Council Member Darlene Mealey in Crown Heights Brooklyn. The organization has since gained the support of The Brooklyn Delegation, The Mark Wahlberg Foundation, HBO, film/television professionals, Medgar Evers College and The ABFF.
In celebration of a great year and to support the growing needs of the organization, Moving Mountains looks forward to its first annual fundraising weekend on Feb 12th & 13th. I am writing to ask for your support in this worth while two day event. Pending your interest, I would like to send additional information on the weekend and about how Moving Mountains has been affecting kids and parents alike in a positive way. You will also get confirmed celebrity attachments and an events listing. Your ability to spread the word about the organization would be very helpful. We are in need of sponsorship as well as donations. All donations are tax deductible in accordance with the IRS. 100% of all donations will go to the direct services for youth.
For additional information on Moving Mountains Inc. please visit our website www.movingmountainsnyc.org. We appreciate your consideration of this request and hope to discuss any questions you may have for us.

With a little faith,
we can Move Mountains!
