DIPLO TO RELEASE DIRECTORIAL FILM DEBUT, “FAVELA ON BLAST

131Favela on Blast, the directorial film debut from Grammy-nominated DJ and producer, Diplo, and his partner Leandro HBL, documents a vibrant and innovative musical subculture that has emerged in Brazil’s impoverished slums, known as favelas. Well beneath the radar of mainstream society for the last 20 years, they have their own language, style and heroes. Their music and culture have gone mostly unnoticed outside of South America until now. Favela on Blast captures the rarely seen stories of MC’s, DJ’s, dancers, and cultural producers through the eyes of Diplo and Brazilian filmmaker Leandro HBL, with memorable appearances from funk superstars Deize, Tigrona, Mr. Catra, and Duda Do Borell.

Favela on Blast documents the culture surrounding “Funk Carioca,” a musical rhythm that mixes the American electronic funk of the 1980′s with the most diverse influences of Brazilian music. It is one of the most interesting musical movements in the world and it comes from one of the most violent and poorest places too: the slums of Rio de Janeiro. Bombastic rhythms coming from the Miami Bass and loops and samples are united to powerful rap vocals using Brazilian slang. This music is designed to be listened to as loud as possible and with high bass pumping through the tropical nights of Rio. The heroes are the creators- the musicians. Their pace is set between colossal street parties; propped with rudimentary sound-systems, warring drug factions, and an eerily tense city where the Police and societies elite have the upper hand until it comes to their musical culture, always Brazil’s heart and nation’s identity.

MAD DECENT ANNOUNCES NEW SIGNINGS FOR 2010!

strikeMad Decent has had a paramount year with releases from Diplo & Switch’s dancehall collaborationMajor Lazer, Dominican by way of the Bronx cumbia songstress Maluca, a Buraka Som Sistemaremix EP and more.

Garnering the cover of the Fader Music Issue, alongside features in Paste, XLR8R, Billboard, URB, Big Shot and Anthem, Mad Decent is preparing for their most challenging and exciting year to come with the announcement of three new signings: Rusko, Bosco Delrey and Popo.

Mad Decent will jumpstart spring with the first full-length release from UK dubstep phenom, Rusko. The North American debut, “OMG“, follows massive singles like Mr. Chips and Cockney Thug plus recent remixes for Kid Cudi, Basement Jaxx, Little Boots, The Prodigy, Kid Sister and tons more. It is slated for a March 2010 release and features new productions alongside collaborations with Crookers, Chali 2una and more.

After strong reception from their first 7″ release, ‘Kill Tonight‘, everyone’s favorite gigantic Pakistani three-some, Popo, will release their debut full length this spring on Mad Decent. The three Philadelphia brothers blend reverb-drenched garage with a youthful punk spirit to make loud, melodic washes of noise and pop. Ariel Rechtshaid, producer of the most recent Cass McCombs and We Are Scientists albums, will be contributing to the production roles.

A relatively unknown songwriter, Bosco Delrey, is the newest member of the Mad Decent collective of artists.  His unique version of rockabilly, dub and electronic music make him a likely candidate to join the Mad Decent family.  His music was brought to the attention of Diplo via Paul Devro (resident Mad Decent DJ) and friend 77Klash.  Bosco’s interpretation of Chuck Berry’s “Round and Round”tipped the scales and lead to signing him for a full length, slated for release in 2010.

Mad Decent will also be embarking on an evolution of their on-line space.  Bringing on writers, editors, artists and the like to expose news, music, culture, art and so forth via their website.  The undertaking has taken months but is a very exciting venture for the Mad Decent team.  Expect columns by Jason Musson of Too Black For BET, Skerrit Bwoy At The Movies, zombie fights and more.

You can also expect a retrospective of the Hollertronix series, where Diplo cut his teeth at the now seminal Philadelphia party thru a cadre of white label edits and mix records.

All of this will be started with an early 2010 release of a Mad Decent label compilation, featuring a retrospective of past favorites, unreleased remixes and brand new material from the roster.

If you thought 2009 was Mad Decent’s finest, you ain’t seen nothing yet!
