Mishka Keep Watch 18 – DJ P.O.L Style

kwxviiifrontKeep Watch 18 features 36 tracks of the past, present and future of UK grime, funky, garage and dubstep curated by none other than DJ P.O.L. Style. If you are left wondering who we’re talking about then you must have been sleeping under a rock for the last ten years of the bubbling UK underground.  Amongst the plethora of tracks you can find many of Nightslugs’ recording artists like Girl Unit, Moska, Egyptrixx and of course L-Vis 1990. The mix continues with classic Dj Narrows track followed up with a handful of grime riddims that will blow your mind such as Rebound X’s “Rhythm ‘N’ Gash”. the grand finale is comprised of  NMBRS records exclusives from SRC and Kavsrave followed by dubstep innovators Joker, Benga and a current favorite of ours Dubbel Dutch’s edit of Youngsta’s “Bongo”.

After helping to form the Glasgow club event Numbers in  2003, DJ P.O.L.Style moved to Tokyo where he has been djing and producing for the past 6 years. In 2007 he started the Numbers off-shootNumbers Tokyo where he has invited guests such as DJ Funk, Modeselektor, Dre Skull, DJ Sega, Kazey, DJ Ayres to name a few. In 2009 P.O.L.Style released a number of tracks and remixes on labels like T&A (Tittsworth & Ayres), Kid 606′s Tiger Bass label and Jess Jubilee & Donna Summer’s Nightshifters label. His tracks have also been remixed by the likes of LOL Boys and Rob Threezy.

Currently he is working on a number of remixes, organizing Numbers Tokyo and helping out at our very own Mishka Tokyo store. He also runs a booking agency called Clear, that organizes tours for foreign artists in Japan and the rest of Asia.

Mishka Keep Watch 17 – AC SLATER

kwxviifrontABOUT THE MIX

This month’s Keep Watch Mix comes courtesy of our hometown bass warrior AC Slater of the infamous Trouble & Basscrew. These pounding 33 minutes drive you through his upcoming release peppered with a host of acapellas to intensify the experience, which starts out with the Drop The Lime remix of Slater’s upcoming single “Take You Higher”.  It then progresses to a more bass-heavy and dubstep sound provided by the help of label mates Ninjasonik and Klash77. Wrapping it up with a 3am “Eternal” vibe that comes courtesy of Luna C – the old school rave producer of 92 Eternal’s “The Feeling”.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

AC Slater (Aaron Clevenger) has been gaining notoriety for cultivating a bass dominant sound becoming one of the most sought after producers of the past 2 years. Raised on 90′s hip-hop and nourished by old skool rave Slater has successfully combined these influences into his own unique style of music production. He was taken on by the Brooklyn label, Trouble & Bass, home to Math Head, Passions and Drop the Lime. Over the past few years Slater has had consistent radio play on BBC 1 and Kiss 100 in the UK, and has been seen as an integral part in the DJ sets of Moby, Tommie Sunshine, Crookers, The Freestylers, MSTRKRFT, Drop the Lime and Stanton Warriors. In the first half of 2010 Slater is set to release his next single ‘Take You’ on Trouble & Bass, followed by the eagerly anticipated ‘Calm Down’ trilogy EP. With the help of T&B, 10 years behind the decks and an arsenal of tracks Slater shows no signs of slowing down. Booking shows across Europe, the UK, Canada, Mexico, Asia and Australia he has been leaving a trail of adrenaline, shattered speakers and loyal fans behind him. He plans to do the same this spring throughout his world tour; all the while working on his debut album due in 2011.

ABOUT MISHKA

The Loops of Fury – May Mixtape 2010

loops_mix_oneThose brilliant little buggers, The Loops of Fury have done it again! The dynamic duo have been busy beavering away in their Brisbane bunker over the past few weeks, crafting some jaw-dropping new electro-techno bombs as they gear up for a move over to the warmer climes of the UK to enjoy the delights of ‘the great English summer’ (yeah right!).

Money to the Motionless Vol.1 is the name of the mix (quite what this means or why, we have no idea, but we’ve been too busy soundtracking our week with the stellar sounds within to care too much), and we hear that this is just the first in a regular series of mixes you can expect during the course of the summer.

Thavius Beck: Dialogue LP & Go!/Away EP

thaviusbeck12_fTHAVIUS BECK: DIALOGUE
BLOG FRIENDLY MP3 “GO!” INCLUDED (CLICK HERE)!

MANNING BOTH THE MIC AND THE BOARDS ON AN ENTIRE ALBUM FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A DECADE, THAVIUS BECK’S THIRD FULL-LENGTH FOR MUSH RECORDS FINDS HIM WITH TOO MUCH TO SAY TO LEAVE IT UP TO SOMEONE ELSE.

“I’m of the opinion that if you have a platform to say something, don’t just say some bullshit. Use that platform to say something worthwhile – it doesn’t have to always be ultra-conscious or serious, but if every song you make is about bitches, cars, and drugs, you either live a very empty life or you’re a huge liar. Either way, I think an MC should be able to draw on their life experiences and translate them into meaningful songs, maybe even grow a bit after reflecting on it during the song writing process.” – Thavius Beck

——————————————————————————

Thavius Beck, like many of Los Angeles’ independent MCs, cut his teeth at the Project Blowed open mic workshop in LA’s Liemert Park. But even in the 1990s, when Beck was a member of Global Phlowtations (along with Mikah-9, Sach, and a handful of others), and went by the handle Adlib, his sights were fixed on the future of music. His debut release,Vs., showcased his ability to both conjure maximal sonic impact with limited means, and his ability to write intricate rhymes and deliver them with an effortless flow (for a good example, check “The Spot” which features Sach).

Since the late 1990s, however, Beck has focused much more on the production side of his skill set, releasing full-lengths under the monicker Adlib including Save Us, Experience Experiments, and Manipulator, as well as two full-lengths as Thavius Beck on Mush Records, 2004′sDecomposition and 2006′s Thru.

Beck spent 2007 contributing production work on Saul Williams’ Niggy Tardust full-length with Trent Reznor. In 2008, he entered the studio with newly minted LA resident K-The-I???, producing K’s entire full-length Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow. The album was licensed by UK hip-hop powerhouse Big Dada, the label that brought you Spank Rock, TTC, Roots Manuva and many more.

Between studio sessions, Beck was taking to the road, traveling Europe and the United States as both artist and DJ. His facile live hip-hop beat construction have earned him much recognition among the electronic music community, eventually leading to sponsorships from M-Audio and Ableton, the creators of ubiquitous beat software Live. Beck’s relationship with Live has grown to the point that his tour stops often include him booking Ableton Live instructional workshops in many of the cities he stops in.

In late 2008, Beck wrapped up recording his latest solo full-length, titled Dialogue. Unlike previous efforts, which have featured appearances from Saul Williams, Cedric Bixler-Zavala (The Mars Volta), Subtitle, and many more, the only voice on Dialogue is Beck’s own.

Across fifteen tracks, including two instrumentals, Thavius cleverly critiques many of America’s ills with a dry, satirical wit that never falls into preachiness. “I think an MC should be able to draw on their life experiences and translate them into meaningful songs, maybe even grow a bit after reflecting on it during the song writing process. The writing and recording of Dialogue was a very therapeutic process for me for those very reasons: I took what I was going through in my life and put it on paper; I released my demons and let them dance over my beats.”

Sonically, the album reaches new heights for Beck. Taking months to mix, Dialogue is Beck’s biggest sounding album to date. Every track bleeds immediacy with warm bass kicks and aggressive highs that sound something like if the Bomb Squad had called Miami home. On his production influences, Beck notes: “I really like prog-rock, weird jazz/rock fusion hybrids, heavy metal, industrial stuff, etc., but I also like soul and funk, older hip hop, grime, some roots reggae. There was an earlier period when I was really influenced by drum-n-bass, and the more pretentiously named Intelligent Dance Music.”

Beck’s longtime roots in the Los Angeles underground music do manifest in the graphic design of the album, which was created by Sonny Kay, owner of GSL Records, the legendary label that spawned such acts as the Rapture, !!!, the Mars Volta, The Locust, Out Hud and a host of others. The two first worked together when Thavius was producing for GSL’s first and only hip-hop signee, Subtitle – who would team up with Beck as Lab Waste for 2005′s Zwarte Achtegrond.

For fans of iconoclastic music of any stripe, Thavius Beck presents Dialogue, and proves that the only musical boundaries he sees are ones he has already left behind.

J DILLA “JAY STAY PAID”. NEW ALBUM FROM THE LATE HIP-HOP LEGEND J DILLA COMING JUNE 2. DOWNLOAD THE ‘BEAT JUNKIES’ ALBUM SAMPLER MIX HERE:

Executive produced by Dilla’s mother, Ms. Yancey AKA “Madukes
By now most everyone is familiar with the story of musical legend J Dilla. The quiet, prolific producer collaborated with everyone from Eryka Badu to Common to Janet Jackson to Prince. Dilla was just beginning to capitalize on his cult status when he sadly passed at age 32 due to Lupus-related complications. Jay Stay Paid is a 28 track collection of unreleased Dilla beats mixed and arranged by Pete Rock. While mostly instrumental, “J$P” also offers a few guests vocals from artists that Dilla worked with or admired including Black Thought of The Roots, MF DOOM, Havoc of Mobb Deep, M.O.P. , Raekwon and more.

Curtailing any notion of jumping on some sort of Dilla bangwagon, Jay Stay Paid was executive produced by Dilla’s mother Maureen Yancey (aka Ma Dukes) along with the musical supervision of Dilla’s only real musical idol, Pete Rock. “It wasn’t rushed and it wasn’t haphazard,” explains Ms Yancey. “This album combines what he did in the beginning of his career, what he did in some of our early hospital stays, which was very deep, and some stuff pulled from old floppy disks & DATs. Its mind blowing…this is like the missing links to Dilla’s legacy.”

The format of the album plays like a radio show with Pete Rock as the program director. With regards to Pete’s involvement, Ms. Yancey gets very excited, “Dilla wanted to pattern himself behind Pete. His dream was to become as close as possible to what Pete stood for. Pete meant everything to him. Dilla would have just been flabbergasted! ” Pete’s sentiments were the same toward Dilla, “Dude was amazing. He just kinda came outta nowhere and the more you heard his beats the better they got. He may not be here with us, but it’s all good we’re going to keep his music alive and well.”
