R&B/Hip-Hop Winners In International Songwriting Comp
Timbaland, Darryl McDaniels (Run DMC), Universal Records Are Among Judges
We are very pleased to tell you that out of almost 15,000 total entries, the R&B/Hip-Hop category winners include Ray Clayton (Ray) (London, England) for his song “My Life,” Tea Petrovic (Tea), Dane Deviller, and Krischan Grohne (Vancouver, BC, Canada) for the song “In A Minute,” and Karoline Tamati and Brent Park (Ladi6) (Christchurch, New Zealand) for the song “Walk Right Up.”
The winners were chosen by this year’s prestigious panel of celebrity and industry judges including Timbaland; Darryl McDaniels (Run DMC); Monte Lipman (President, Universal Republic Records); and many others. More than $150,000 in cash and prizes is shared among the 65 winners, including an overall Grand Prize of $25,000 (US) and over $20,000 in merchandise and services.
The 2009 R&B/Hip-Hop winners include:
FIRST PLACE
First Place in the R&B/Hip-Hop category is awarded to Ray Clayton (Ray) of London, England for his song “My Life.” Clayton is an artist with a message readily understood by those with a willing ear for change. Born in Japan to British and Japanese parents, he writes, composes, produces and performs his own material. Graduating from Paul McCartney’s Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts with a BA (Hons) in Sound Technology, he self-produced his EP entitled Rebel With A Cause. In his music, Ray has found a lifeline, and it is his dream to be able to share that lifeline with others to support, awaken, and shake people of all ages, races and creeds.
SECOND PLACE
Winning Second Place in the R&B/Hip-Hop category are Vancouver, BC songwriters Tea Petrovic (Tea), Dane Deviller, and Krischan Grohne for their song, “In A Minute.” Also winning First Place in the same category last year with her song “Fire & Flame”, Serbian born Tea and her band have played over 100 shows (including a performance on CTV’s Good Morning Canada, Global Morning News, and the Urban Rush). Dane has written and produced songs that have sold over 40 million records worldwide, reaching the top of the charts with artists Kelly Rowland, Jessica Simpson, Hedley, Stacie Orrico, The Corrs, 98 Degrees, Laura Pausini, LFO, Amy Grant and Jim Brickman.
THIRD PLACE
Awarded Third Place in the R&B/Hip-Hop category, for the song “Walk Right Up” is Karoline Tamati and Brent Park (Ladi6) of Christchurch, New Zealand. Aided and abetted by her musical partner Parks, the 27-year old has established herself as one of the country’s pre-eminent musicians. Her ability to blend jazz, reggae, and soul vocal styles with razor-sharp socially conscious lyrics has cultivated her an enviable reputation as one of New Zealand’s leading live performers. At the 2009 Pacific Music Awards, Ladi6 gained a nomination for APRA’s Best Pacific Song Award, Niu FM Best Pacific Urban Artist and Pacific Blue Best Pacific Female Artist – which she won. The icing on the cake was Ladi6 claiming the Best Urban/Hip Hop Album title at October’s New Zealand Music Awards.
