Justin BUA: POPS Show in Los Angeles

BUA, the legendary urban artist, proudly introduces his newest collection of original art, entitled BUA “POPS”, as well as showcasing some of his classic works on Saturday, September 11, 2010, at Hold Up Art, located in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles’ Little Tokyo district. For BUA, POPS represents more than just popular cultural representations and iconography or the style of art made famous by the likes of Warhol and Haring. Known as the artist “for the people, of the people, by the people”, POPS continues BUA’s message as an homage to the artist’s fan base as well as creating pervasive hip hop imagery recognizable across cultures.
BUA is internationally known for his best-selling collection of fine art works and prints–”The DJ” being one of the most popular selling posters of all time. Born in NYC’s untamed Upper West Side and raised between Manhattan and East Flatbush, Brooklyn, BUA was fascinated by the raw, visceral street life of the city. BUA’s distinct style born on the city walls and subway trains — “New Urban Realism”, captures the essence of contemporary culture as expressed through the memories of BUA’s turbulent youth, navigating the streets and underground worlds of the urban jungle and the birth of the hip hop scene. Following in the footsteps of the great masters, BUA represents the lives of both the revered and the marginalized, the heroes and the underdogs of our time.

In addition to the artist appearance and exhibiting the BUA art, Hold Up Art will also present an exclusive limited edition BUA silkscreen for sale, a live DJ, street performances, and refreshments.

Fat Beats Announces Closing Of New York And Los Angeles Retail Stores

After 16 years, Fat Beats has announced the closing of the legendary label’s two remaining retail locations in New York and Los Angeles. Fat Beats will celebrate the legacies of the stores, which are scheduled to close in early September (New York: September 4th, Los Angeles: September 18th) by throwing a series of blow-out sales and tribute parties open to the public during their last weeks. Fans can check www.FatBeats.com for updates.

Fat Beats’ longest running and most famed location is at 406 Avenue of the Americas in Manhattan. Since the 1994 opening of Fat Beats’ flagship retail location, hip-hop fans have traveled far and wide to visit the iconic store. With locations soon following in Los Angeles (7600 Melrose Ave.), Atlanta, Amsterdam, and Tokyo, the record stores were a place to experience hip-hop culture and its legacy, which became a global phenomenon. “The closing of Fat Beats is just like one of my friends passing away. They promoted vinyl at its highest degree for the culture of good music and that makes it more difficult to say goodbye,” says DJ Premier.

The announcement of the closings is a reflection of the woes that have been plaguing the industry for years. Global chainHMV closed their last US location in 2004. Tower Records shuttered in 2006. Last year saw the close of the last Virgin Megastore, and the story is no different in 2010. For Fat Beats, maintaining two stores well into 2010 is a testament to the stores’ importance to the music and to fans and consumers continuing to support independent hip-hop.

While news of the stores’ closing marks the end of an era, the future is not doom and gloom. Digital sales continue to increase industry-wide; for Fat Beats, currently operating a profitable and growing online retail store, this has provided a boon to business as fans continue to order mp3s, vinyl, and CDs from FatBeats.com. Although digital sales continue to grow, executives at Fat Beats understand the importance of independent retail stores and are planning to re-open a brick and mortar hip-hop lifestyle location sometime in the near future.

The future looks just as bright for Fat Beats Distribution and the label. Fat Beats Distribution, which has been renamed FB Distribution, continues to strike noteworthy distribution deals with independent and major labels worldwide and is now working with different genres of alternative music. Fat Beats Records will continue to release notable albums from their own impressive roster of artists including ILL BILL, TruMaster/KRS-One, Black Milk, Trinity, Sha Stimuli, Q-Unique,and more. Fat Beats owner and President Joe Abajian says, “This is the start of a new era for Fat Beats. We’re adapting to meet the needs of our demographic by revamping and improving our existing systems. While our website, which stocks everything available in our retail stores, continues to do very well, we’re still exploring our options for alternate retail locations in the future. We’re proud of our legacy and will continue to re-invent ourselves. For now, we’ll see you online at FatBeats.com

DIVINE DIPS-DESIGN HOTELS PRESENTS HOTEL POOLS TO DIVE FOR

Hot or cold? Green or red? Infinity or plunge? The swimming pool has come a long way since the ancient Greek and Roman baths. From an urban concrete jungle to a lush hillside in Asia, Design Hotels™ presents four hotel pools ideal for sunbathing, socializing and of course, swimming! For an eye-catching pool in a vibrant colour Alila Ubud offers an emerald-green infinity pool above a dramatic river valley in Bali. In Koh Samui The Library’s vivid red pool is the place to see and be seen, with an enviable location next to the popular Chaweng beach. For a stylish pool party The Standard, Downtown LA’s rooftop hosts weekend pool parties complete with DJs and underwater LED lighting. Lastly Habita Monterrey in Mexico offers two rooftop pools – one cold, and one hot – so bathers can cool off, or heat up while taking in stunning views of the city and the surrounding mountains.

The Library, Koh Samui, Thailand
Just a few steps from Chaweng beach, The Library’s vivid red pool is one admired by guests and passersby alike. Made using mosaic Italian glass tiles in red, yellow and orange, the pool is set on the beachfront and is surrounded by a wooden deck with red mattresses and black bean bags. Guests are welcome to choose from the poolside menu, or take a book from the hotel’s impressive white library complex adjacent to the pool. At night the underwater lights transform the swimming pool in to a dazzling spectacle and provide the perfect backdrop to dinner or drinks in the restaurant and bar next door. The Library was recently voted as one of the top 10 amazing worldwide hotel pools by TripAdvisor in 2010.

The Standard, Downtown LA, United States of America
The rooftop pool at The Standard, Downtown LA is part of one of Los Angeles’ most coveted nightlife hotspots. Situated on the rooftop of the twelve-storey hotel in Downtown LA, the pool has panoramic views of the city. On the opposite side of the terrace there is sculptured topiary, an open fireplace, dancefloor and bar. The turquoise heated pool stands out sharply against the deep red Astroturf of the surrounding sundeck, where there are also bright red water-bed canopies for up to ten. The bar and dancefloor creates a fun and bustling space where nightly international DJs play to a fashionable crowd. The rooftop area can also be hired exclusively for events for up to 240 people, making it ideal for anything from corporate functions to editorial shoots.

Alila Ubud, Bali, Indonesia
Cited as one of the most beautiful pools in the world, the infinity pool at Alila Ubud boasts a spectacular location perched on a terrace floating above the lush Ayung River valley. The pool spreads out to form an elongated rectangle until it seems to disappear down the terraced jungle hillside. A daily afternoon tea of traditional local sweets is served by the pool, where guests can relax on sun beds shaded by large Balinese umbrellas. In addition to its 58 rooms, the hotel has four Valley Villas on stilts with wooden decks and four Pool Villas providing seclusion with a private pool.

Habita Monterrey, San Pedro Garza Garcia, Mexico
With different views and contrasting temperatures the two pools at Habita Monterrey cater to all tastes and weather conditions. The hot pool is heated to 90 degrees Fahrenheit, making it ideal for a dip in the winter months. There is also a cold pool which is great for cooling off during the summer when temperatures rise. Situated on either side of the eighth floor roof terrace with 360-degree views over the desert metropolis and Sierra Madre, the pools are divided by a chic concrete bar. The bar can cater to up to 80 people and is open for snacks and cocktails from 10am to 2am. On one side there is a view over Sierra Madre and its eponymous Cerro de la Silla, known as the Chair Mountain, whilst on the opposite side there is a view of the El Obispado, a green mountainous area.

Open Mike Eagle’s heady debut album

l_61a1c5cead704857a2d4679e5d62ed62If you haven’t heard Open Mike Eagle’s debut album Unapologetic Art Rap you really bleeping should! Profanity! It’s new Los Angeles rap that comes straight out of the Project Blowed ethos with a little Low End Theory in there to boot.
He’s on his way up and more people are just now starting to tune into the creamy goodness of his ejaculatory trajectory. YEAH.
HERE’S A STREAM OF THE LEAD SINGLE, “Unapologetic Art Rap”  (feat. Nocando). It comes out as a packaged single this summer.
Here is the music video to the song “I Rock” about how he is a teacher by day and a rapper by night!

L.A. RAPPER AMAD-JAMAL READIES DEBUT ALBUM

jpegThe Chronicles of a Brotha Like Rodney King Featuring Dilated Peoples & Defari
DROPS JUNE 29, 2010
It’s rare to find a rapper willing to truly bare his soul for his music. On his debut record, Barely Hangin’ On: The Chronicles of a Brotha Like Rodney King (Urban Umpire Records/ABB), the LA emcee Amad-Jamal reveals his most intimate thoughts about the life-alerting events that led to the making if his debut album. Guest appearances on the LP include Dilated Peoples, Defari, Mayya Lady Dragon, and Gotham Green. Production is shared by Brisk One and DJ Dahi.

Barely Hangin’ On’s jazz infused beats and live instrumentation make it unlike any other recent hip-hop record to date. In fact, the album was completely remixed after it was finished. Amad-Jamal and his partna Colonious Funk (of The Solution) added live base, drums and sound to all 13 tracks.

Because of the remix, the record was delayed for almost a year, but Jamal hopes listeners will find the album worth the wait. On “Boy Meets Girl,” Jamal laughs at himself and the irony of lost love, while offering the message that pain is about progress and that all experiences—good and bad—open your mind to new truths. “Stop Fuckin’ Around” is an ode to the emcee’s mother, where he recalls her often futile warnings against tagging buses and cruising the Crenshaw strip. On “Going Postal” Amad-Jamal recalls his frustration with his day job as a mortgage lender.

Amad-Jamal has been around Los Angeles music scene since the late ‘90s. In 1999 he formed with the group The Solution with Salt Lake City producer Brisk One, Colonious Funk (base), Kurt Fagan (drums), DJ Kai Wing, Nongenetic (MC) and vocals by Maaya Ota aka Lady Dragon. In 2000, he met ABB Records’ Beni B. and, with Rakaa Evidence, and Defari released the maxi-single “The Renaissance.” Later he released “LA City” with Evidence. Jamal was featured on ABB’s “Always Bigger & Better” Volume 1 where he recorded “What I Need” with DJ Khalil (of Self Scientific).

In 2003, Amad-Jamal was the only West Coast artist booked for the Rock Steady Tour and has performed live and toured with the industry greats including the Beat Junkies, RZA, Defari, Talib Kweli, Cali Agents, Prince Po, KRS-ONE, Myka 9, Dilated Peoples, Freestyle Fellowship, Mr. Fab, Zion I, Prince Paul, Saul Williams, Mos Def, Wu-Tang Clan, Eminem, Q-Tip, Little Brother, and Bahamadia.

Born and raised in LA, Amad-Jamal, named by his mother after the famous Jazz legend, had a pretty typical upbringing, listening to N.W.A records and free styling at The Good Life Café as a teen. He attended John Burrows Jr High with Rakaa Iriscience where they were both immersed in the graffiti scene.

“There must have been something in the water at my college,” quips Amad-Jamal who attended Clark Atlanta University with the likes of Lil’ John, Arrested Development’s Speech, and Saul Williams.

A distinctly Los Angeles record, Barely Hangin’ On harkens back to an earlier time in hip-hop (both sonically and topically) while simultaneously being an entirely modern album.

RAKAA (OF DILATED PEOPLES) ANNOUNCES DEBUT SOLO ALBUM CROWN OF THORNS TO BE RELEASED ON DECON

rakaa_490x3671PRODUCED BY EVIDENCE, DJ BABU, THE ALCHEMIST & MORE

APPEARANCES BY CHALI 2NA, KRS-ONE, ALOE BLACC,

TIGER JK, TASHA (AKA YOON MI RAE) & MORE

Rakaa Iriscience, one third of world-renowned hip-hop crew Dilated Peoples is releasing Crown of Thorns, his debut solo album after four albums with his group and numerous guest spots, on July 20, 2010 via Decon Records. Produced by fellow members Evidence and DJ Babu with guest production by The Alchemist, El-P, !llmind, Exile, Sid Roams, King Jahzzy, and Eric Bobo & DJ Rhettmatic, Crown of Thorns is the sonic prism that has absorbed the myriad cultures taken in by the travelling emcee and reflected them back in the form of a groundbreaking debut.

The record features a stripped down aesthetic that carries through the duration of the debut, a refreshing minimalism that manifests itself as a unique soundscape.  Rakaa’s newfound unlimited lyrical license allows him to fully expand on his heavily conscious ideas about socio-political issues, relationships, family and culture. It’s not an overstatement to say that Rakaa’s whole life has, consciously or not, gone into the production of this album. ”This record is my opportunity to give context so people understand more what I’m trying to do,” says the emcee. “It’s the first time I’m really making a conscious decision to sit down and let somebody come into my house, and after all of this time, I’m welcoming all guests.”Some of those guests include, Defari, Chali 2na, Fashawn,Aloe Blacc, and the legendary KRS-ONE.

Rakaa builds bridges with the international scene on the dj honda produced track entitled “Ambassador Slang”. The song features some of the top Asian-Pacific Islander artists in the world, including Roscoe Umali and Korean lyrical heavyweights Tasha (aka Yoon Mi Rae), Tiger JK(Drunken Tiger), and Tablo and Mithra Jin (both of Epik High).  On the title track “Crown Of Thorns”Rakaa traces his musical history and looks toward hip hop’s future, commenting “Ev told me I could be more Emo / Then I just laughed and said, ‘Fuck that we need more Premo!’”, while Aloe Blacc’ssoulful singing carries the hook.

Rakaa’s music career started soon after joining the New York based hip-hop collective Rock Steady Crew as a graffiti artist and MC.  He helped found their L.A. chapter and subsequently joined the Universal Zulu Nation. After a series of educational label experiences, Rakaa and partner-in-rhymeEvidence released 1997′s underground classic single “Third Degree” before adding Babu to the ranks. Since then, the team known as Dilated Peoples have put out a series of critically acclaimed albums and developed an international reputation for live performances. Rakaa stays busy traveling around the world hosting events such as the Red Bull BC One (in Johannesburg and Paris) and the R16 (in Incheon, Korea), destroying a variety of studio booths, “chipping away at [his] black belt” in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, and attending school as a full-time advertising student.

Crown of Thorns proves that Rakaa can stand alone in the spotlight and deliver his fans the music they’ve been waiting for.

Composed of more than 300 hits from all over the map, Brain Salad Surgery is DJ Quickie Mart’s pop music thesis gone science project. Unlike Girl Talk or most other DJs, there is absolutely no added production or stock loops in this mashed up insanity of sound. Everything used in Brain Salad was taken from other recordsthat were all commercially released. Also, BSS was mixed and edited by Quickie himself using Technics 1200′s, Serato Scratch Live, and Pro Tools 7.
It was just a short time prior to Hurricane Katrina when Quickie Mart came up in the smoke filled, late night bar scene of New Orleans. Since his relocation to Los Angeles, he has released a number of different mixtapes, distributed thousands of copies, and been featured on a number of other artists’ projects. He has toured every corner of the country as a solo act, as well as with other acts like Galactic, iCON the Mic King, Q-Tip, Cool Kids,Shwayze, The Knux, and Media Darling Records. On top of a heavy tour schedule QM’s accolades also include playing large events like Vegoose, SXSW, and Zen Festival. He has been featured at twice at the prestigiousNew Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, three years at Voodoo Music Festival, and four years in a row at Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival. He has shared stages with artists such as George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic, Jurassic 5, RJD2, Fishbone, Lyrics Born, Joss Stone, Perry Farrell’s Satellite Party, DJ Klever, Particle, Akon, Gift Of Gab, Lupe Fiasco, Inspektah Deck, and Lilly Allen. He has also had the honor of performing on stage with the legendary Mac “Dr. John” Rebennak.
QM has been featured on numerous television programs including Current TV, MTV2, Louisiana’s famous Dew Drop Inn, and NBC’s Last Call with Carson Daly as Devin the Dude’s DJ. This talented DJ/producer/engineer has produced countless tracks, including the song “Q & A” by the Lucky Stiffs, which was released on Scion’s Labeless Lifestyle CD. Half a million copies were distributed worldwide. He has worked in the studio with artists like UPT/Universal’s Juvenile, Anti/Epitaph’s Galactic, Fatbeats’ L.A.’s Finest, and Stone’s Throw’s Percee P. After the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, the rest of the world recognized DJ Quickie Mart’s hard work when he was featured in a three-page spread in URB Magazine’s December 2005 issue. He has also received mentions in Blender, Filter, XLR8R, andOffbeat magazines, and was hailed “New Orleans’ Hip Hop Champion” by LA Weekly. In addition to consistently recording and touring, he holds down a successful weekly in Los Angeles at the Air Conditioned Supper Club. SNOOP & TOMMY THE CLOWN unite to create C.L.O.U.T.

wordsoutpr_tommysnoopA Series of Monthly Battle Night Events to Promote Organization’s Mission to
Help At-Risk Youth

Snoop Dogg recently announced his partnership with famed entertainer Tommy the Clown to create an organization called the C.L.O.U.T. (Changing Lives One Youth at a Time) Foundation. The foundation will aim to provide a creative and social outlet for at-risk youth in order to help avoid the misplaced creative energy which too often results in gang violence, crime, and abuse.

The first event organized by C.L.O.U.T. is a monthly Battle Night. NO LOGO PRESS RELEASE…formerly Freshjive

Dear Friends,

Since I started Freshjive, I have had a personal conflict with this business of “branding”. In fact, I was so conflicted at one time, that I quit working. I am in the business of promoting the company brand yet personally I am not interested in items for the brand name.  It’s a bit of a quagmire with me because I hate the culture of promoting a brand yet I enjoy designing clothes and t shirt designs.

Beginning with our spring 2010 line, we will no longer be using our brand logo or name on any of our product, including all labeling and t shirt designs. Nowhere on any product will our name or previous brand logo be used anymore.

Regards,
Rick Klotz

HARD ANNOUNCES LINEUP FOR SUMMER MUSIC FESTIVAL AT THE FORUM IN LOS ANGELES

19August 8th, 2009 HARD SUMMER TO INCLUDE UNDERWORLD, CHROMEO, CROOKERS, CRYSTAL CASTLES, A-TRAK, TIGA, THE BLOODY BEETROOTS, SEBASTIAN, BUSY P, AMANDA BLANK, AND MORE

www.hardfest.com

Good news for California’s work-weary and party-deprived: the dance music masterminds behindHARD New Year’s Eve and the sold out HARD Haunted Mansion will return to Los Angeles with their signature mega-party this summer.

British music stalwarts Underworld will transform the 15,000-capacity LA Forum into the world’s largest dance club.  Enlisted to aid HARD’s party-starting cause: Canadian electro-funk duo and talk-box enthusiasts Chromeo, preeminent Italian superstars Crookers, lo-fi mutineers Crystal Castles, and electro-hop wunderkind A-trak. Currently slated to join them are the likes of Tiga, The Bloody Beetroots, Sebastian, Busy P, Amanda Blank, Steve Aoki, Rye Rye, Skeet Skeet, Sinden, Jack Beats, Destructo, Dan Oh and 12th Planet

2009′s HARD Summer lineup speaks to the broad, multi-faceted appeal that has made HARD’s events so successful.  Veterans Underworld opened electronic music’s floodgates with their daring mega-hit “Born Slippy .NUXX” (UK #2) and its pivotal role in the film Trainspotting. The duo earned the respect of critics and fans with their unforgettable, accomplished performances and ever-evolving style. The slick synth-pop of Chromeo jostles up against the arty bit-crushed productions of Crystal Castles and the high-tech eclecticism of Tiga. Fans will revel at the multi-media electro-punk of HARD all-stars Crookers and The Bloody Beetroots

This year the HARD creative team builds on the immense success of last year’s HARD Summer Music Festival which attracted over 7,000 revelers to party with N*E*R*D and MSTRKRFT, and was hailed as “the party of the year” by URB.com. With every event they put on, HARD enhances its reputation as a powerhouse, and this summer’s party is sure to raise the bar again. Pre-sale tickets can be purchased at Groovetickets and Ticketmaster.
