Multi-platinum and chart-topping R&B singer Mark Morrison is gearing up for the release of his third full-length studio album ‘I Am What I Am’, to be lead by the first single also titled “I Am What I Am”, due this summer/fall.
“I Am What I Am” is a delicious slice of soul, with Mark’s distinctive vocal used to it’s maximum effect. Last month marked 15 years, since Morrison’s single “Return of the Mack” reached #1 in the UK.
Born in Germany, to Barbadian parentage, Morrison lived in the UK, before moving to Florida, at a young age. His debut album in ’96, ‘Return of the Mack’, became a multi-platinum success, selling 3 million copies worldwide. The lead single “Return of the Mack” exploded, reaching #1 in several countries including the UK. It opened the US market for him the following year, spending a remarkable 41 weeks on the US Billboard singles chart, where it peaked at #2, and made the Billboard Hot 100 “Songs of the Year” chart. The album made him the first artist in British pop history to have five Top 10 singles from their debut album. These included “Trippin’,” “Horny,” “Moan & Groan,” and “Crazy,” which also spent 7 weeks on the US Billboard singles chart.
Although his career was going well, Morrison was constantly in trouble with the law. In ’97 he was imprisoned, the same year (coincidentally) he received four Brit nominations, a Mercury Music Prize nomination, an MTV Europe award nomination and 5 MOBO nominations (including winning best R&B), as “Return of the Mack” began to climb its way to #2 on the Billboard charts receiving platinum status en-route. His post-prison release “Who’s The Mack?” hit the Top-20.
Morrison returned in ’06 with two well received independent releases, “Just A Man”, and “Innocent Man” featuring DMX, which appeared in sample form on “Innocent (Misunderstood)” by rapper Cassidy, and reached #3 on Billboard’s Bubbling Under R&B/Hip-Hop Singles chart in ’08.
The new album, ‘I Am What I Am’, which drops this fall, was written entirely by Morrison, and is set to include production from renowned record producers Mike City, and The Co-Stars.
