Miles Jones is a rising star in the Toronto hip-hop scene, but for those who know him best this does not come as a surprise. Bass runs through Jones veins. His grandfather helped pioneer the reggae movement at Studio One in Jamaica where Bob Marley and many others recorded their first big hits, while his father Hedley Jones aka Deadly Hedley Jones Jr. was an influential DJ on CFNY-FM and the early Toronto club scene.

Miles continues this tradition by being active in all aspects of music as a DJ, producer, emcee, songwriter and the owner of his own label Mojo Records & Publishing. A true student of the craft, Jones debut album One Chance also served as his thesis at McMaster University. The disc was released to critical acclaim and even helped garner Jones the 2007 Ontario Independent Music Award for Hip Hop Artist of the Year. Miles has also been recognized for his song writing talents. He helped contribute 11 songs to Sony BMGs music catalogue as part of the Canadian Idol songwriters conference.

Through 2008, Miles Jones has continued to ride this wave of success opening for veteran hip-hop legends KRS-One and Souls of Mischief of Hieroglyphics fame. While Miles remains true to the lyrical and poetic integrity of hip-hop, he is also in touch with the current direction of music. He has opened for up and comers Thunderheist and opened for international phenomenons T-Pain and Raekwon of Wu-Tang in Halifax in October 2008. 2008 also saw the beginning of Miles Jones international music career with a performance in Osaka, Japan.

The future is bright for this young emcee, Miles a man of great drive and passion has taken responsibility for his own destiny, funding and executive producing his new album Runaway Jones. Miles had the chance to work with some of his childhood icons as well of some of todays rising stars, including the first single Never Too Late that was produced by Detroit’s Black Milk.

Video: J*DaVeY - “Get Together”

jdavey8While the world impatiently waits forJack Davey and Brook D’Leau ofJ*DaVeY to release their Warner Bros. album New Designer Drug, we are left to lust after their every creative morsel. Luckily, Jack and Brook have blessed us with a visual for their recently released freebie track “Get Together.” Our favorite genre-scramblers serve up another gem made of one-part electronic music, two-parts soul, a dash of hip hop, and a little more than a pinch of sex appeal with a video that can only be described as a futuristic amalgamation of Tinkerbell meets The Shining.

Directed by up-and-coming filmmaker Veronica Hinds, the video takes viewers on a journey of transcendence as the main characters are lured away from their everyday lives by a floating orb of light that leads them to the entrance of the unknown. When asked about the main concept behind the video Jack Davey explains, “I kept seeing a processional march down a hallway… and wanted to convey the main characters following their light to a meeting place.” This concept was adopted to convey the main message behind the song; transcendence - breaking free of the confines of the everyday to experience a life without boundaries. “People need to step out of their individual bubbles and start connecting with other people” says Jack Davey. “Step outside of your comfort zone and feel something new, try something new, speak to someone new, transcend.” This message rings especially true with fans who recognize J*DaVeY for their refusal to be boxed into a stereotype or genre. When the glowing orb appears in front of you, will you follow it? Are you ready to break away from the confines of everyday life and explore a new dimension with Jack and Brook?

Wordsmith Video “Tour Guide To New Bride” // Vintage Experience Out March 30th

untitledNu Revolution Entertainment would like to present Wordsmith’ new UK single/video, “Tour Guide To New Bride” directed by D-Dot Films. This is the second single on his debut album “Vintage Experience” in stores March 30th. This single is a break from the regular commercial Hip-Hop singles as it conveys a unique story to the listener. With a catchy hook, his lyrics and storytelling ability allow you not only dance in a club, but also get a kick out of how witty the song was put together.
“Vintage Experience” is broken up into 4 chapters with unique scores and plays out like a “Movie on Wax.” The material, in general, ranges from songs Wordsmith wrote/recorded from 2006 to 2009 with all the production coming from in-house producers Strada, Professa, Capish and Street Level. The features were kept to a minimum with only Chubb Rock, Camp-Lo, Grand Daddy I.U., Soulstice, Kontact & Black Knight and local DMV stars Kimia Collins and Whitefolkz lending verses on the album.

** DIY HIP HOP HEADS BIN LADEN BLOWIN’ UP RELEASE HIGHLY CONTROVERSIAL MIXTAPE ** ** B.B.U.’s FEAR OF A CLEAR CHANNEL PLANET drops March 1st, 2010 **

bbu2_prThe heart of Chicago’s DIY hip hop scene pumps out the arteries of three ravenous Emcees - Epic, Illekt and Jasson Perez - who make up the bombastic hip-hop trio Bin Laden Blowin’ Up (BBU). With arrestingly catchy beats and hard-hitting lyrics, the boys of BBU are pleased to announce the release of their debut mixtape, FEAR OF A CLEAR CHANNEL PLANET,  presented by Ruby Hornet and available on www.FOCCP.com.

BBU consists of three close friends from the streets of Chicago who aim to sprinkle gems of knowledge and communicating their message through raucous shows and vivacious energy. When asked why BBU do what they do, Jasson Perez states that for BBU it is about “making a connection to the culture, to the movement.” Aside from their hectic schedule, the group remains close to their roots and still finds time to stay active in the community and raise funds for various local charities and causes.

The mixtape’s opening track “BB Who” hammers listeners with spitfire rhymes and a stampeding beat that’s tied together by a cheering, home team chorus of shouting girls. Without a lull, the mixtape ensues with a bum rush of bounce and gristle as it features the current internet smash “Chi Don’t Dance” which recently received an 8.0 out of 10 for best new tracks and proclaimed a “bona fide summer jam” by Pitchfork. Shortly after, The Washington Postclaimed the same song as being “one of the year’s most criminally overlooked tracks” and “More infectious than H1N1″ from Time Out Chicago. The BBU sound is a concoction that can best be paralleled to Das Racist’s shameless amusement with the militant backbone of Dead Prez and the danceability of Spank Rock.

BBU’s reputation as a restless touring hip-hop group has allowed them to smother the map with their brandishing of subversive lyrics and infectious dance beats. From their CMJ showcase in NYC to the packed parties at colleges in the Midwest, and even their 2009 Lollapalooza appearance performing “Chi Don’t Dance” with Hollywood Holt, BBU are consistently racking up points for their explosive live show and insatiable hunger for the MIC. Artists alike have also taken notice of the BBU’s Pandora’s box of tunes, which has secured them some stage sharing time with the likes Diplo, Wale, Buraka Som Sistema, Dead Prez, The Cool Kids, DJ Sega, and Jean Grae.

Be sure, for all those in the Chicago area, to check out the Mixtape release party on February 27th at theSubterranean. And for all those flocking to SXSW this March, you can catch BBU storming through the festival with a slew of head-turning performances.

RAPPER DONNIS GETS SIGNED TO ATLANTIC RECORDS

JOINS “CROWD CONTROL TOUR” CROSS-COUNTRY TREK

DEBUT ALBUM SLATED FOR LATER THIS YEAR

“FASHIONABLY LATE” MIXTAPE DUE OUT THIS MONTH

Atlantic Records has announced the signing of their new artist Donnis who has released the details of his first-ever US tour. The rising rapper will be among the multi-artist hip-hop bill entitled the “Crowd Control Tour,” also featuring Kidz In The Hall, 88-Keys and Izza Kizza.  The 16-city trek kicked off on Sunday, February 28th at New York City’s Highline Ballroom, with dates then continuing through early April.

Donnis is quickly making a name as one of the most talented new stars on the Southern hip-hop scene.  The Georgia-based MC first attracted attention last year with 10.Deep’s breakout mixtape, “DIARY OF AN ATL BRAVE,” and has since scored major appeal amongst listeners with his smoothed out rap anthem, “Gone” (released on revered DJ/Producer A-trak’s  Brooklyn based Fool’s Gold Records).  “Donnis is a truly original, compelling new voice on the hip-hop landscape, and we pulled out all the stops to bring him into the Atlantic family.  His creativity and lyrical flow are hugely impressive, and the Diary of an ATL Brave mixtape was a captivating introduction to this major talent.  Now that we’ve sealed the deal, we’re looking forward to watching Donnis take it to the next level” proclaimed Atlantic Records Chairman and CEO Craig Kallman.

While hard at work completing his Atlantic debut album, Donnis will keep listeners entertained with his new mixtape “Fashionably Late” set to be released this month.  Currently featured in the March issue of XXL’s “Show and Prove”, Donnis will also be included in the magazine’s hugely influential “Freshmen 10″ alongside West Coast rapper Nipsey Hussle and J. Cole from North Carolina. The talented rapper who has already shared stages with such luminaries as T.I., Chingy, and 112 - will also be among the new stars performing at the upcoming South By Southwest (SXSW) festival in Austin, Texas.

D-Sisive - Every Rose Has Its Thorn

d-sisiveroseDear friends,

For the past month and a half I’ve been locked up in the studio with producer extraordinaire Andrew “Fresh Kils” Kilgour (Shania Twain, ACDC, Jon Secada) recording the follow up to my Multi-Platinum, Latin Grammy Award-Winning debut LP, Let The Children Die. Though we are near completion, we are still a few months away from the release of Vaudeville.

Not being prolific is something I’ve been guilty of. Ive been attacked in the press, and insulted by fans for leaving them dry without new material. Its been days since my name has appeared on a blog, and for that, some devoted listeners have deemed me dead. Its been weeks since Ive released new music, and for that I apologize. Im not a machine. Im merely a man. Flesh and bones. A robot, I am not.

Which is why I’ve decided to give you a taste. A lick of the spoon. A nibble of the cake. A swig of the sauce. A swallow of Vaudeville.

I selected the song that best represents where Im going, yet never abandoning where Ive been. Underground Hip-Hop, but with a twist. A journalist for Black Hair Magazine once labeled me The Bret Michaels of Rap. Now Im ready to proudly wear that crown. Or Cowboy Hat. A spiky brimmed, solid gold cowboy hat covered with jewels. Sitting atop a gold dipped bandana covered with emeralds that cannot be ruined by sweat.

Ladies & Gentlemen, I proudly present to you…
Every Rose Has Its Thorn.

Toronto DJ/Production Duo Circle Research Sign To URBNET

cr_gardiner-express_streetCircle Research, the globally acclaimed Toronto DJ/production duo, have signed with URBNET, Canada’s pre-eminent urban music label. Their latest LP Gardiner Express is the group’s third, coming on the heels of their much-loved Toronto hip-hop mix show (now a popular podcast on the web) and stellar production work with luminaries such as Ivana Santilli and K-OS.

Appearing just a year after the duo’s sophomore effort, Who?, was released on Germany’s Melting Pot Records, Cricle Research’s newest album marks a clear evolution in the group’s unmistakable sound. For Nik and Gil, the title Gardiner Express doesn’t just refer to the main highway connecting downtown Toronto to its uptown counterparts, it also represents a state of mind.

“We were at the stage where we were naming the songs,” Nik explains, “and I suggested 401 (a highway that connects northern Toronto) but Gil was like, ‘Gardiner Express–” Gil adds — “From there, we realized this name had encompassed the overall feeling of the album. It reminds us when we were growing up in Etobicoke (a Toronto suburb), zooming down the highway towards the city on a Saturday night, blasting whatever was in heavy rotation at the time.”

While the classic analog boom-bap vibe of their original efforts is still the focus, the duo feel Gardiner Express marks their most personal music to date. The songs touch on themes of love and alienation in the 21st century — coolly aided by the duo’s recent embrace of some fresh beat-making tricks and technology.

For instance, it’s out with the familiar Pro Tools rig and in with the Akai MPC 6000 sampling drum machine (a long-time J-Dilla favorite). And while the beat-loving duo aren’t making plans to audition for Canadian Idol just yet, they’ve added a new wrinkle to the mix.

“Vocoders and talk-boxes are cool,” says Nik. “They let guys like us - who dont rap or sing - express ourselves vocally, while adding a distinctly electronic edge that compliments our music”

Circle Research’s third album Gardiner Express will be released on URBNET, Tuesday, April 20, 2010.
