Nikon’s D90 is this Holiday’s go to gift.  The 12.3 mega pixel SLR has an unbelievable amount of on camera features, not to mention it’s the first D-SLR with a movie mode. Added features in the retouch menu; D-lighting lightens dark areas of a photo; Image Overlay combines two RAW images, and Quick Retouch utilizes D-lighting and boosts contrast and saturation. Its super high resolution 3-inch LCD display allows quick accurate review of all captures.  The D90 is easy to hold, has best-in-class battery life with an optional battery grip for more power and excellent photo quality.  The only tricky element to this camera is video focus as it only offers manual focus in video mode and could take a little time getting used to it.  Overall, the D90 is well built and good to go for first and old timers.
